1. Introduction
1.1 Function
The JRC Model JLN-205MK2 Doppler Log is an equipment for measuring accurately the true speed and run
of a ship, utilizing the Doppler shift of ultrasonic signals, which are radiated from a transducer into sea water
downward obliquely to the bow and stern sides, then scattered and reflected in the sea water. The transducer
is mounted on the hull bottom.

This equipment measures a relative speed to seawater from the hull bottom within 3m. Therefore, ship’s
speed corresponding to the output of a main engine can be obtained without containing the speed such as the
currents. The ship’s speed error margin caused by the change in the water line doesn't occur because the
transmission and the reception of the pulse are done, and it excludes the signal in the vicinity of the bottom of
a ship. Moreover, because the dual beam method to launch the ultrasonic wave signal in two directions (fore
and aft) is adopted, the ship’s speed error margin because of the change in the trim is greatly reduced.

This equipment offers measured information to other equipment such as radar and ECDIS.

The JLN-205 conforms to the IMO (International Maritime Organization) performance standards, provides
accurate displays of ship’s speed over a wide range from dead slow to maximum.

2.6 Mounting of the Transducer
・ Do not fill the resin within the range of the seawater invasion in the tank interior.
You may spread the resin on the space between the cover board and the main body of the tank.
Fill the resin such as Silicone Bond, etc. to counterbored hole for the installation bolt of the cover board.

Do not fill the resin

within the range of the
seawater invasion.

After tightening, fill polyester putty, Possible to spread the resin.

Silicone Bond or asphalt. (shipyard)

・ Tighten until tightening GLAND becomes 10mm from the upper surface of the tank.

16
・ Do not bend, and install the acute angle with the standing up part of the cable.
Do the wiring processing in the cable standing up part so as not to swing by the vibration.
Do not pull the cable strongly in the state of kink (It tangles, and twisted state).

An acute angle bend is prohibited strictly.

Tightening gland

・ Note that there might be the disconnection when the cable is pulled with being twisted.

17
2.7 Cable Laying and Piping
・ Give the piping waterproofed to a position that is higher than the sea-level in preparation for "Cable
protection and interference prevention from other cables" and "Water leak from a tightening gland part".
・ Do the vibration prevention measures and the self-weight hold measures of the cable if necessary by
packing the dry sand etc. in piping.
・ Fix the cable so as not to vibrate when installing it in the watertight compartment.
・ Do not pull the cable strongly in the state of kink (It tangles, and twisted state) when laying the cable.

2.8 Final Check
・ Confirmation of the transducer
1) Phenomenon of problem
The quality of the transducer was not confirmed before the trial. And, the trial was done without knowing
the thing that the transducer has been damaged.
Therefore, the case that becomes a big problem has been generated.
2) Information or countermeasures
To confirm whether the transducer is normal before the ship is launched, carry out the following work:
- Confirm the presence of the disconnection of the transducer cable, and
- Check the resonance frequency of transducer.
1. Confirm the presence of the disconnection of the transducer cable
1.1 Remove the transducer cable from the terminal TB2 of Signal Processor (NJC-25).
1.2 Measure the resistance of the Fore and After transducer and thermistor by the multimeter.
Measurement result (Don’t use insulation resistance meter.)
- 1 If the resistance of the Fore and After transducer is 1 to 5Ω, transducer is normal.
-2 If the resistance of transducer is more than 5Ω, replace it because the transducer is defective.
-3 If thermistor resistance is 2k to 4kΩ , thermistor is normal. (Measurements are different on the
temperature)
Internal connecting wires of CFT-022B/023B

2. Check the resonance frequency of transducer

2.1 Remove the transducer cable from the terminal TB2 of Signal Processor (NJC-25).
2.2 Measure the shield wire ①&③ of the Fore and After transducer by the Antenna Analyzer (AA-30).
2.3 Connect the core and shield respectively as shown in the figure below.
2.4 Set the Antenna Analyzer (AA-30) to SWR mode and monitor the signal.
2.5 Frequency is scanned, and a Dip point (Signal level minimum point) is a resonance point.
Measurement result
-1 The resonance frequency of transducer is normal if the Dip point is near 2MHz.
-2 If the result of the measurement doesn’t have Dip point, replace it because the transducer is defective.

20
2.9 Others
・ NKF-547 transducer cannot be exchanged in principle in the sea.
The transducer exchange work by the diver is very dangerous.
Contact JRC when breaking down.
・ This equipment measures the speed of the ship by using the ultrasonic wave. The ultrasonic wave causes
attenuation and diffusion when the influence of the bubble is received, and cannot measure an accurate
speed of the ship.

CAUTION !
Install the transducer in the place where the bubble is not generated when sailing. Install the
transducer forward from 1/10 of the ship’s lengths in the large vessel. Moreover, install the
transducer forward from it when there is bow-thruster.

Bubble

Installing position Bow-thruster

・ Install it the place separated from the transducer of another equipment by 2m or more for the interference
prevention.
・ It is recommended to be installed with Doppler log ahead of echo sounder though it usually installs from the
bow in order with low frequency.
・ Install it to be suitable for the direction of the bow in parallel to the bow tail line of bow mark of the
transducer within about 5°.
・ The tightening torques of the screws such as bolts and nuts not specially specified are based on following
