LESSON PLAN FORMAT

The following is a sample of the lesson plan format used by the University.

Lesson Topic/Focus: Volume: Displacement Date: 12/11/18

Learning Area(s): Mathematics Year level(s): 5/6

Strand (s): Measurement and Geometry Lesson duration: 1hr 15mins

Sub-strand(s): Using Units of measurement

Religious Education N/A

Guideline:

Learning Standard(s)/Outcome(s)/ Learning Intentions:

At the conclusion of this lesson, the students will know/understand that:

In this lesson, I will understand that 1cm3 is equal to 1ml

Assessment/Success Criteria:
Students will measure the volume of a plasticine indentation in millimetres

Assessment criteria for analysis

1. Has written the learning intention at the top of page

2. Has recorded results of plasticine experiment

3. Has written a reflection on plasticine experiment

Teaching focus:
A. the pre-service teacher's teaching skill for observation by Associate Teacher;
Having a clear learning intention

and

B. teaching skills that the pre-service teacher would like to personally develop.
I would like to improve my confidence when explaining instructions

Background to the learning:

A. References for teacher background knowledge
https://youtu.be/KCjTgC5gCO0

B. Identify students’ current knowledge

- Students currently know how to measure volume, using LxWxH=
- Students know that the Volume of one MAB mini is equal
Lesson resources:
- Plasticine
- Plastic Syringes
- Water
- MAB mini is 1 cubic centimetre
Lesson content:
A. Introduction 15 mins

Mental Maths – 21
In pairs Card game, students place 4 cards faced up on the table
and can use addition, subtraction, multiplication or division to
obtain 21. You don’t have to use all of the numbers.

Eg. 5, 6, 4 and 5
5x6=30
30-4=26
26-5=21

State the Learning intention - In this lesson, I will demonstrate that 1cm3
is equal to 1ml

B. Development 20 mins

1. One MAB mini is 1cm3

Focus Question: What is the Volume of 1 MAB mini?

2. The volume of the MAB indentation is 1cm3

Focus Question: What is the volume of the MAB indentation of the
Plasticine?

3. 1cm cube is equivalent to 1ml

Focus Question: How much water would we need to fill the indentation?

4. Conversion 1ml equals 1cm3

Focus Question: If made 10 indentations how many millilitres of water
would we need?

5. Making connections to the volume of every day products as used in

previous lesson
Focus Question: Which products used in last lesson, measured the
volume in millilitres and why?

6. Extending prompts
Focus Question: When we measured the volume of the chicken stock, it
was 392cm3. If 1cm3 equals 1 millilitre why is the chicken stock labelled
containing 500ml.
Possible reasons:
- Measurements were not accurate
- Stock does not fill the entire container

7.8 x 4.8 x 14.1 = 527.9cm3

C. Consolidation, practice, extension 30 mins

1. Each table will be given a piece of plasticine, a tub of water, tweezers,

syringe and an MAB block.

2. Students then use the MAB to place an indentation in Plasticine.

3. Students use syringe to fill the indentation with water.

4. Record their findings.

D. Closure 10 mins

Students will write a reflection on the experiment

What did I do:
What did I learn:
Then share…

Post-lesson review and evaluation:

Student achievement:
All students were able to use the plasticine and demonstrate that 1cm3 is equal to 1ml. They used the
MAB minis to create an indentation in the plasticine and use a syringe to measure out the amount of
water that they would fill it with. This followed by a reflection, which consisted of what the student did
and what they learnt. This gave evidence that the student were able to grasp the concept of
displacement.

Teaching effectiveness:
My teaching was highly effective in this lesson as I planned it thoroughly and had a clear learning
intention. I felt as though because this activity was very concrete, it will be set in the students minds
and were able to gain a better understanding as to how volume is used.
