AI Technology

Background

The main subject is the rapid development in AI technology recently and its societal, economic,

and political implications. Artificial intelligence is a topic that branches out into many uses

whether it be data encryption for security, smart every-day devices such as Alexa or Google

Home, or even vocal replication. The evolution of AI technology is accredited to the creation of

new algorithms that connect to practical applications in our everyday lives. The real curiosity lies

with the consequences of AI technology. For example, the recent surge in voice recognition

software that can teach an AI system a person’s voice for perfect replication could have many

practical uses, but very detrimental consequences to world affairs (Darlington). The aim is to find

the specific consequences that AI systems will have long term for humanity itself.

Research Questions

● What types of ethics would society need to reevaluate or focus on when implementing AI

into social systems or the economy?

● How would automation and complex intelligence aspects of AI have severe

economic and social impacts; what are those influences?

● Considering ethics and structural consequences, what are the conversations
going on about how to integrate AI successfully into society?

The Research Plan

Primary Research Results

For text based evidence, the goal is to find direct technological reports and overviews of certain

developments in the AI systems of interest on Google Scholar since I’ve typically found more

scientific and direct lab research on there. Another area of interest for gathering primary research

would be to get an interview with someone knowledgeable about AI systems. I plan to try and

connect with one of Syracuse’s computer science professors after checking their areas of

research and send an email to set up an interview. I plan to submit the primary research results

on Friday, March 29th.

Annotated Bibliography

When gathering my secondary sources, I plan to use the Syracuse Library Database, as well as

the other databases provided such as JSTOR and Proquest. I will potentially use google or

youtube to find verified video sources directly from news stations, or ted talks. I’m going to keep

a specific eye out for more opinionated but heavily evidence based sources to get input from

others about the conversation with AI technological implications. I plan to submit the annotated

bibliography on Friday, March 22nd.

Synthesizing Essay

Part A:

For creating the framework of the essay, I want to first organize my evidence which I usually do in

the form of tables, or diagrams. Then I will create a detailed outline and determine an arguable

thesis about AI systems. After these steps, I will start the written portion of the essay. I may

include a certain chart for statistics to demonstrate the prevalence of AI systems in the U.S. This

portion would be submitted by Friday, April 12th.

Part B:

In order to really get an understanding of artificial intelligence, I wanted to work on writing a

moderately simple AI program as I am still a novice programmer. The scope of the program

would likely involve the AI interpreting a string of text, and eliciting a preprogrammed response

to the text. The language of the program would be in C++, and I would be able to provide the

source code, a screen recording of the program in action, and potentially a working exportable

program (I would need to figure this out). The inspiration of this choice is from my passion for

programming as well as my decision to minor in computer science. This would be submitted by

Friday, April 19th.
