Extended Written Response Assessment

Unit: Art and Culture in Context


Grade: 9th

Clear Purpose:
The previous Chapter provided a more in depth look at the functions of art both culturally and
historically. The purpose of this formative assessment is to evaluate the students' ability to analyze and
describe the functions and features of art among different cultures throughout history. Students will
complete two different tasks in this assessment scenario (10 points) and stand alone (10 points). After
the assessment is complete, the teacher will go through the results with the student so they are aware of
their level of ability to analyze and describe the characteristics present in works of art from various
cultures throughout history. Prior to turning in the assessment, students will have the chance to grade
themselves according to the provided rubric. Students will also be given the opportunity to assess their
strengths and weaknesses and evaluate their progress after the assignment has been evaluated by the
teacher.

Directions:

In this unit we have taken a more in depth look at artists and works of art from various cultures and
time periods throughout history and the function and importance of the different features present in
those works. This assessment is designed to test your ability to analyze, describe and understand the
functions and features of works of art from the time periods and cultures that we have discussed. This
assessment will prepare you for the next unit in which you will analyze and apply what we have
learned about art, history and culture in the process of creating your own works of art. It will also give
you a basis for understanding how art functions in society today.

There are two questions on this assessment that are worth a total of 10 points.
Scenario – 1 question (5 points)
Stand Alone – 1 question (5 points)

Please write your name, today's date and hour at the top of the page. There is to be no talking until all
assessments have been turned in and I will let you know when they have all been submitted. You will
have 1 hour to complete the assessment. If you have any questions please raise your hand and I will
come to help. When you are finished, please place your assessment face down on my desk.

Answer each question completely in the space provided below each question. You may use the front
and back of each sheet to write your response.

After completing each question, please read over your response carefully and score your work using the
rubric provided. When you are finished turning in your assessment you may read or draw quietly.

Question 1 - Scenario (5 points possible)


In the previous unit we explored artwork from different cultures throughout history. Imagine that you
are an artist from the Italian Renaissance. You have been commissioned to create a portrait of a local
patron that will be displayed in his home. Show that you understand the function of art from this time
period by explaining what you will take into consideration when creating this work of art. What sorts of
meaning, symbolism, aesthetic qualities would a patron expect in a painting? Analyze why those
features may be important to the patron. What materials might you use? What sorts of spacial
techniques might you employ? How will you begin and end the process? This will help you to consider
ideas and materials when producing your own work in the future. take Please provide a detailed

Question 2 – Stand-alone (5 points possible)


Throughout the previous unit, we have looked at paintings from both the Italian and Dutch
Renaissance. Analyze and define some similar characteristics that are present in Italian versus Dutch
Renaissance paintings In what ways do they differ? Consider use of perspective, subject matter, color
and line as well as composition. Also consider the perspective of both the artist and the patron, as well
as religious and social ideas being expressed at the time. This will help to inform meaning in your
future works of art. Please write at least one paragraph for each category. Writing a list of similarities
and differences, or creating a table may be useful before writing your response.
