Clear Purpose:
The previous Chapter provided a more in depth look at the functions of art both culturally and
historically. The purpose of this formative assessment is to evaluate the students' ability to analyze and
describe the functions and features of art among different cultures throughout history. Students will
complete two different tasks in this assessment scenario (10 points) and stand alone (10 points). After
the assessment is complete, the teacher will go through the results with the student so they are aware of
their level of ability to analyze and describe the characteristics present in works of art from various
cultures throughout history. Prior to turning in the assessment, students will have the chance to grade
themselves according to the provided rubric. Students will also be given the opportunity to assess their
strengths and weaknesses and evaluate their progress after the assignment has been evaluated by the
teacher.

In this unit we have taken a more in depth look at artists and works of art from various cultures and
time periods throughout history and the function and importance of the different features present in
those works. This assessment is designed to test your ability to analyze, describe and understand the
functions and features of works of art from the time periods and cultures that we have discussed. This
assessment will prepare you for the next unit in which you will analyze and apply what we have
learned about art, history and culture in the process of creating your own works of art. It will also give
you a basis for understanding how art functions in society today.
There are two questions on this assessment that are worth a total of 10 points.
