Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: The Story that cannot end just yet…
Content Area: ELA
Grade Level(s): 6th
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE6W3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or
events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.

Technology Standard Addressed: 7.) Global Collaborator

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: KidPub

URL(s) to support the lesson: https://www.kidpub.com/nestory

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
I plan on using a website that allows for student publishing, KidPub, in my classroom. Before starting this
publishing opportunity, I will introduce students to, and ask them to sign a technology contract and I would
also send home a letter to parents with all the necessary information they might need to be completely
informed of what their student will be doing for this activity. This way parents will be in the know and aware
of the technology and sites their students are using. Next, students will either head to a computer lab, to
create an account with KidPub.

The students will be adding their own writing to the Never-Ending Story on the KidPub website. This will allow
them to be creative while meeting the ELA standards.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Computers, Laptops(Mac OS or Windows OS), iPads, or Mobile Phones
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students will be working with their peers, mentor, and mentors outside their classroom and
beyond their school during this online project. The KidPub website allows anyone to access and view
the story, which is great for students to connect with others. Due to this, I would have students only
use their first name when publishing.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students are getting the opportunity to create their own
original products by engaging in this project. They are adding on to another student’s work by
publishing their own.

c. Higher-order thinking: This online publishing opportunity allows students to engage in higher-order
thinking/Bloom’s because they will be creating.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The students
who use this site and participate in the Never-Ending Story are those who care about the products of
other students. They are all working on adding on to the same story, and the students will have so
much fun during this process.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students will be engaging in this lesson by writing their own stories and responding to other
stories within the classroom.
Representation: The needs of all students will be met since they have the ability to make the story as simple
or as complex as they desire. The goal is to allow all students the opportunity to express themselves how they
want within their story.
Action and Expression: Students will be acting when writing and publishing their stories as well as expressing
themselves throughout the process.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: If the class of students sign the technology contract
and their parents approve of the contract alongside the activity, I believe this is a safe and fun lesson. Before
getting started, I would educate students on internet safety and privacy.

Reflective Practice: I feel that this lesson will impact learning in a positive manner. Students will be getting
the opportunity to create and publish their own work on a site that many others can view. They can continue
with this story and go back to view its progress. Students will also be completing an activity that aligns with
their ELA standard and gives them some great practice for writing narratives.
