CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
The demand of high quality material in any industry pursue people to innovate.
People have to create something invincible yet still be light in weight and cheap in
price. In the other side, the amount of not-recyclable manufacturing material waste
is significantly increasing. Scientists predict that there will be an era when only
garbage are left on the earth (Hoornweg & Bhada-Tata: 2012). As a result, it is
created a material that is fulfil everyone’s concern; having outstanding
characteristics and distinct from its constituents, and saving natural resources of
materials. The material named composite is actually a material system composed
of two or more physically distinct phase whose combination (Groover: 2010).
Composite functioned as a substitute of engineering materials that are not fulfilling
some specific industrial need, i.e. metal, polymer, and ceramic. As it known, the
application of composite is widely spread, from infrastructure to houseware,
everything is disrupted by the existence of composite. Because of this, we need to
know what kind of application is correlated with our need in daily basis.

1.2 Formulation of The Problem

1. What is the example of composite materials application in daily basis?
2. What is the specification of the product that applies composite materials?
3. What type of reinforcing agent and matrix that is used in the product?

1.3 Objective
1. To find out the application of composite materials in daily basis,
2. To understand better about the specification of the product mentioned,
3. To discover the type of reinforcing agent and matrix used in the product.
CHAPTER 2
LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Definition
Composite material is a material system composed of two or more physically
distinct phase whose combination produces aggregate properties that are different
from those of its constituents. In certain respects, composites are the most
interesting of engineering materials because their structure is more complex that
the other types of material, i.e. metal, ceramic, and polymer (Groover: 2010).

2.2 Classification
Composite materials can be classified in various way. One possible classification
distinguishes between:
1. Traditional composites,
Occurred in nature or have been produced by civilization for many years.
Wood is a naturally occurred composite material, while concrete and asphalt
mixed with grave are traditional composite used in construction.
2. Synthetic composite,
A modern material system normally associated with the manufacturing
industries, in which the components are first produced separately and the
combined in a controlled way to achieve the desired structure, properties,
and part geometry.

2.3 Components
A composite material consists of two phases: a primary phase and a secondary
phase.
1. Primary phase,
Primary phase or called matrix within which the secondary phase is
imbedded. The matrix phase can be any of three basic material types: metal,
ceramic, or polymer.
2. Secondary phase,
Secondary phase is also called the reinforcing agent, because it usually
serves to strengthen the composite and also as the imbedded phase of the
composite. The reinforcing phase may be in the form of fibres, particles, or
other various geometrics.

CLOSURE

4.1 Conclusion
Combination of various types of materials in making Saphire XT Tsunami Spin
Fishing Rod 6 ’20-40 lb SABSXT 601 MH produces a fishing rod that has a high
degree of flexibility so that it can conquer fish fighting power with a numerous
technique. And also this fishing rod weighs 30% lighter than the average fishing
rod so that it can reduce and prevent anglers from becoming tired too quick and
able to survive for a long time.

4.2 Suggestion
Selecting the right material is one of the most important thing in manufacturing
product, since each material has their own advantages and disadvantages. Because
of that, before making a product, it should have determined what kind of product
that will be made, the purpose of the product, the origin of what should be in the
product, and what should not be in the product. Last, consider what type of product
material is suitable and how to apply it to become a product.
