Lesson Idea Name: Weather

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 1st
Content Standard Addressed: S1E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate weather data to identify weather
patterns. b. Ask questions to identify forms of precipitation such as rain, snow, sleet, and hailstones as either
solid (ice) or liquid (water). C. Plan and carry out investigations on current weather conditions by observing,
measuring with simple weather instruments (thermometer, wind vane, rain gauge), and recording weather
data (temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) in a periodic journal, on a calendar, and
graphically.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3. Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool:

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☒ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The students will be able to discuss the weather with one another and share ideas with the
class. This will help give the students a voice during the lesson and will help build their understanding as they
hear the ideas of their peers.
Representation: The topic of the lesson will be presented to students through multiple forms of media.
Important information will be told to the students by the teacher and in the video and will be reinforced as
they work on their weather journals.
Action and Expression: They will be given the opportunity to demonstrate what they know as they work on
their weather journals in the classroom. They will gather information and organize their findings which allows
them to express their creativity.

Lesson idea implementation

The teacher will introduce the lesson to the students and will have the students gather by on the carpet at
the front of the room by the board. The teacher will play the video that has been attached above to help
activate prior knowledge and get them engaged in the lesson and focused on the topic at hand. The students
will then be assigned a weather journal project. They will talk with one another about design ideas. They will
also raise their hands and share what they think are important components to include in their weather
journals. The students will then step outside and take notes on the weather that day. They will include the
date, temperature, and descriptions to explain what they notice. They will continue to do this each day and
add to their journals while in the classroom.

After a few weeks, the teacher will collect the journals and grade them as a summative assessment. The
students will be graded on accuracy, organization, and sufficient detail. The teacher can scaffold throughout
the process to ensure that the students each have a clear understanding of what the expectations for the
assignment are. The teacher will also use feedback and feedforward forms. Each student will have a form
filled out for them based on their work and the forms will be handed out. This will help them to know where
they did really well and areas that they could improve. To extend their learning to a higher level, the students
would be asked to me their own rain gauge and test how well it works on a rainy day.
Importance of technology:
A lesson on weather could be taught without using technology. However, the video is a great supporting
resource to incorporate in the classroom. The video will present information and reinforce the content on the
lesson. The video will also be fun to watch. This will help each of the students to stay engaged and get excited
about weather. The video will also give them ideas for what to look for while working on their weather
journals.

Inspiration (optional): N/A

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

I would make sure that all of the content in the video is appropriate for the children before showing it in my
classroom. I will be sure to give credit for sources and not put in any information that could cause the children
to be offended or disrespected. I would ensure that the content is culturally responsive and if necessary, I
could post the video on my classroom blog so that parents and administrators can have access to it as well. I
will be sure to review policies and laws before incorporating media in my lesson plans.

Reflective Practice:
I feel like the video as well as the activities included in this lesson will be very beneficial for student learning.
They will have the information presented to them in multiple forms and will get ample opportunities to
practice their understanding on weather. The video is also fun kid-friendly and this will promote student
engagement. In order to extend the lesson, I would have the students each design and create their own rain
gauge. They would wait until a rainy day and test how well their rain gauges work. Another technology tool
that could be used would be weather apps or weather games online that will help them practice in various
ways.
