Delta-T Scan User Manual
Date: 9 July 1996
Installation
Create a directory for DT-SCAN on your hard disk
e.g. C:\DT-SCAN
Copy all the files to it.
To run DT-SCAN
Change to the DT-SCAN directory and run DT-SCAN.EXE
e.g.
CD C:\DT-SCAN
DT-SCAN.EXE
Note: the files DT-INST.EXE and CCMOVE. mentioned in the user manual, have been
removed, along with the copy protection.
The software authors Gunnar Kirchhof and Carl Pender implemented a different method than
the one published in the user manual.
In the manual it says that it is derived using the measured perimeter, assuming the object is
an ellipse and then solving the equation for its smaller semi-axis, knowing the length of the
larger semi-axis.
The authors report that comments in the code show that they changed this method, early in
1992, to a method which uses the area, not the perimeter.
The reasoning behind that change was that area determination is more accurate than
perimeter determination. They report that all test results shown in the Appendix are based on
area and not on the formulae shown in the manual.
We apologise for this oversight.
The correct procedure is essentially the same, except that the area is used instead of
perimeter:
The length of the larger semi-axis is obtained from calculated width and calculated height of
the object as shown in Figure 35. It is assumed to be the larger of the two. The smaller semi-
axis is calculated knowing the area of the object and assuming it is an ellipse. The area of an
ellipse is:
area = π a b
The larger semi-axis is known, and so is the area, thus the length of the smaller semi-axis can
be calculated.
The shape factor is calculated as described. i.e. the percentage ratio of measured perimeter
and the perimeter of the object calculated from its two semi-axes, assuming it is an ellipse.

Part 1 Installation

To run DT SCAN
Change to the DT-SCAN directory and run DT-SCAN. EXE

CD C:\DT-SCAN

The sample CONFIG.SYS file in Appendix 2A on page 187 of the User Manual
is correct for Hewlett Packard ScanJet IIc scanners. These were
superceded by ScanJet IIcx scanners, which requires two device drivers,
MINI400I.SYS and SJIIX.SYS, instead of the single SJII.SYS driver.
Installation of these device drivers is explained in the ScanJet manual,
section 2-8. One feature of the new software which should improve accuracy
is the provision of a lamp warm-up option.
The manual (section 6.4) recommends that users should set up a RAM drive
in order to speed up the analysis of large image files. However this
would not result in any performance improvement if you have already
installed the version of SMARTDrive which is supplied with Windows 3.1
(NOT the Windows 3.0 or DOS 5.0 versions) with a similar amount of cache
RAM, and you are using a 386 or 486 computer.
For an equivalent amount of RAM allocated to its cache memory, the Windows
3.1 SMARTDrive actually runs very slightly faster than a RAM drive on 386
and 486 systems because it reads and writes in 32-bit protected mode
(also called enhanced mode), whereas the RAM drive switches back to real
mode (= standard mode).
Part 6: Bugs
============
There are no known bugs in this version of the Delta-T SCAN software -
please let us know if you find any. A Software Problem Report form is
provided at the back of the manual for this purpose.
#2 : If the '.out' extension was omitted from the output file name the
program would append 'out' without a period. NOW FIXED.
#3 : using sin theta or pi/2 with white background & image with size >.75 buffer
bottom quarter of the image was not inverted resulted in darkband at bottom
of image and silly results NOW FIXED
#5 : Program crashed if more than 65536 intercepts in any one of the 1000
thickness intervals when analysing root length using length pi/2 or length
sin theta analysis. NOW FIXED.
Part 8: Problems
================
The user manual provides help and information on many of the problems that
may arise - see under "Trouble" and "Trouble shooting" in the Index. If
you need more help, either call your local agent, or call Delta-T Devices
directly, telephone no. 01638 742922 (international calls +44 1638 742922),
and ask for Technical Support with Delta-T SCAN.
