Grade Level(s): 7th Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE7RL3: Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how settings shape the characters or plot). Technology Standard Addressed: 4. Innovative Designer: Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions. But because of this I have the students working in pairs instead of individually. This will help as coding can be quite difficult and having two students working on it together can really help with their learning. It also helps EL students and lower achieving students to be working in pairs as there will be someone there with them to help guide them along so they will not be left behind while coding. Lesson idea implementation: In this lesson students will be using the website scratch to code a small adventure game based off a short story they will write in class. This project will be done in partners and will be done at the end of the unit. Students will first be taught plot development and the different stages included in plot. They will then collaborate with their partner and create a short story that includes at least three elements or stages of plot. They will also be required to have a protagonist and an antagonist. After coming up with their short story and getting it approved by me they will then go into coding it into a game. Before this the students will be given a lesson on how to code and given an ample amount of time to practice around with it before being thrown into this project. They will be given several days in class to complete their coding game. After all the students are completed with the game, we will have a day where everyone will pull up their games on computers or laptop and the students will be given the class period to go around and play some of the other students games. Importance of technology: Technology is huge in this lesson as the main portion of it is coding their story into the game. While I could just have students write the story and be done with it I believe that by adding the coding element to it the lesson becomes a lot stronger. It allows for students to practice a very useful skill that they may not be able to interact with often and it allows for a fun alternative to a traditional written paper and gives students a fun way to share their work once they are done. Coding helps this lesson be more meaningful and fun for the students which can lead to a better overall understanding of the standard. Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Scratch is a very safe site that I can see there being many issues with having the students use. First making sure every student has the necessary internet safety forms on file is important before they use the websites. Then when students publish their work making sure they publish it under their class nickname they use when posting stuff online is a great way to ensure protection of the students identity. Reflective Practice: This would be the end of a unit lesson and I think it will really be a good way for students to reach the standard as well as learn the new skill of coding. Going on in my lesson I believe I would try to use coding in them as well so students can keep up with the skill and continue to work with it. I feel it would best benefit my students going forward in todays technology driven word.
