Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: This lesson allows for active participation, and self-reflection to content and activities.
Working as groups they must work together to finish the scavenger hunt
Representation: I would pre-teach vocabulary and symbols so when the students begin the scavenger
hunt, they fully understand the continents and oceans names and shapes.
Action and Expression: GooseChase provides guides and checklists for scaffolding goal-setting. The
students complete each step leading to the goal of winning the prize at the end.
Lesson idea implementation:
After teaching the class about the continents, oceans, and landforms the past two days this activity is used
to reinforce the lesson. Before the activity begins, we will review the material by showing them pictures of
continents and oceans unlabeled. I would call on students who raise their hands to name the unlabeled

picture. After that quick review they will grab one iPad for each of their group and log into the GooseChase
app. GooseChase is a mobile app the lets you create scavenger hunts or use scavenger hunts already created
in their system. This is a fun interactive game to use to see if the students have grasped the standard. I would
create the scavenger hunt on the app prior to class, using the main concepts of landmasses, continents and
oceans.
The scavenger hunt will occur around the classroom with clues at each stop. The scavenger hunt stops
would be my desk, the front of the classroom, multiple different desk, the reading corner and the door,
among others. An example of a question would be “this place is the same color as the desert” the place would
be my desk which is brown, and the students would be able to answer if they remember what the desert
looks like. Other tasks in the hunt will include creating things, analyzing, and remembering. This activity
should take about an hour, but I will leave room for it to go over by 15 minutes. In the end they will all return
to their desks which is the final destination and they will find mini maps to take home as a study tool.
Reflective Practice:
This activity will further expand the students learning of continents, oceans, and landforms. Learning it
verbally from the teacher leads to the understanding of the concept but getting hands on with the content
through the scavenger hunt allows for the students to go in depth on the lesson. Including videos and drawing
tools can bring additional benefits to the scavenger hunt. It can enhance the thinking level and make it more
fun for the students as well. To bring this activity to a higher Blooms level, you could have the students create
a scavenger hunt themselves with the knowledge they remember about the lesson. This change in the activity
will let the students take control of their learning and let their creativity blossom. When they are pleased with
the scavenger hunt they made, they can be published onto the GooseChase website for other classes to use if
they wanted to.
