Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The students are engaged in the lesson because they are given individual choice in what life
cycle they want to create their video on. This lesson allows for plenty of individuality and creativity which will
keep the students engaged and enjoying the activity. Also students are provided with a great number of
resources to use in order to create their own video.

Representation: This lesson displays a variety of ways of representation. The students are not only given the
information visually but also in auditory form. Students that have a visual impairment can listen to the video
and the students with a hearing impairment can watch the video as long as there is a transcript provided.
Each students’ background knowledge will be supplied in the introductory video that will be provided as well
as later activated when they are asked to create their own video of a life cycle based on the information they
have seen/heard.

Action and Expression: The students are given a vase number of ways to express themselves through the
creation of these videos. They are able to choose all aspects of the video in order to show an understanding
of a life cycle. The students will be able to use many different tools in order to guide them in this process,
such as laptops, tablets, library, and dictionaries. Lastly, the students will be able to communicate their
message through including their voice into the video if they would like. If they are not comfortable with it
they can look to DiscoveryEducation.com for some help.

Lesson idea implementation:
To begin the lesson, we will have a class discussion on the life cycle of amphibians. I will then ask the
students what they know about life cycles and see the different responses I get from them. After the
discussion, I will show them the video I made on the life cycle of amphibians. After the video, I will have them
create their own video of a life cycle of their choice. I will have them do their own research on different life
cycles in order for them to determine which one they would like to complete this activity on.

At the end of the week, the students will submit their final product to the teacher. Their video should be at
least two minutes and should include all research on the life cycle of their choice. The teacher will review all
videos over the weekend. On Monday, the class will be able to watch everyone's video on the different life
cycles. The students will be given access to each video to be able to go back and watch at a later time.
Importance of technology:
The Life Cycle of Amphibians played a critical part to this lesson because it is where the students got their idea
to create their own video on a life cycle of their choice. However, this project could not be completed without
iMovie as the focal point. If the students were taught this material and not shown the video on the life cycle
of amphibians, they may not have been as engaged as they should. The technology that will be needed for
this lesson will include iPads, the iMovie app, and the internet to access any resources they need to complete
their final product.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
This activity definitely has potential for concern among the administrators and the parents of the students,
because the students are using technology that will be used to create a video and will most likely be posted
somewhere on the internet. In order to help reduce dome of these fears I will be sure to password protect the
blog in which the students would be posting to, this will make it where only parents, administrators and the
teacher have access to the blog and what is posted on the blog. Another way to help protect the privacy of
the students is by having them use their classroom number instead of their actual name, that way I will know
who they are but everyone else will not know who they are. Internet safety will also be implemented and the
students will only be able to access a certain number of websites that they are allowed to use, one being
DiscoveryEducation.com. The students will not be adding any images of themselves in their videos, the only
thing personal is their voice but they will not say their name at all during the video, which will help keep their
privacy.
Reflective Practice:
I feel as though the activities for this lesson will impact the students learning because they are fully engaged
in active learning and creation of their own video on the life cycle of their choice, but they are also learning
the standard in a way that is interesting and encourages the creative side of the students and also their
individuality. This project would be implemented at the beginning of the unit, I would extend this lesson by
allowing the students to watch a partners video and complete an activity based on life cycles. Other
technology tools that could enhance this project include having the students be the ones to speak in their
video instead of choosing a video from youtube. This would personalize the video and bring the lesson to an
even higher level of thinking.
