Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, it is a form of periodontal disease that involves inflammation and infection
that destroys the tissues that support the teeth, including the gums, the periodontal ligaments, and the tooth
sockets
Causes
1. General illness
2. Poor dental hygiene
3. Bacterial plaque accumulated in the small gaps between the gums and the teeth
4. Pregnancy (hormonal changes increase the sensivity of the gums)
5. Overly vigorous brushing or flossing of the teeth
6. Uncontrolled diabetes
7. Braces, dentures, bridges, and crowns
Symptoms
1. Mouth sores
2. Swollen gums
3. Bright red or red-purple appearance to gums
4. Shiny appearance to gums
5. Bleeding gums (blood on toothbrush even with gentle brushing of the teeth
6. Gums that are tender when touched, but otherwise painless
Diagnosis
Treatment
1. Professional tooth cleaning twice per year or more frequently for severe cases. This may involves various
instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth.
2. The removal of plaque is usually not painful, and the inflammation of the gums should be gone between one
and two weeks.
3. Oral hygiene including proper brushing and flossing everyday is required to prevent the recurrence of
gingivitis.
4. Anti-bacterial rinses or mouthwash may reduce the swelling and local mouth
5. Gels which are usually antiseptic and anesthetic can also help
6. Repair of misaligned teeth or replacement of dental and orthodontic appliances may be recommended.
Prevention
1. Good oral hygiene because it removes the plaque that causes the disorder.
2. For people who are prone to gingivitis, brushing and flossing may be recommended after every meal and at
bedtime.
3. Special appliances and tools such as toothpicks toothbrushes, toothpastes, water irrigation, or other devices
should be used by people who are particularly prone to plaque deposits.
4. Electric toothbrushes are also recommended to patients to improve their oral hygiene.
