Question

Evaluate the following limit by Riemann integral:

1 1 1
limn→∞ ( n+1 + n+2 + ..... + n+4n ).

AAKASH MEHTA (IIITA) UMC April 2, 2019 2/9

Solution

We have our limit L as following:

1 1 1
L=limn→∞ ( n+1 + n+2 + ..... + n+4n )

1
Taking n as common from all the terms we have

L=limn→∞ n1 ( 1+1 1 + 1
1+ n2
+ ..... + 1
1+ 4n
)
n n

The above expression can be expressed as a summation

P4n
L=limn→∞ n1 1
r =1 ( 1+ nr )

Solution

Definition:
Let f : [a,b]→ R and let Pn ={x0 , x1 , ..., xn } be a partition of [a,b]. Let
ck [xk−1 , xk ], k = 1, 2, ..., n. Then a Riemann sum for f (corresponding to
the partition Pn and P the intermediate points
ck ) is S(Pn , f ) = nk=1 f (ck )∆xk

AAKASH MEHTA (IIITA) UMC April 2, 2019 4/9

Solution

Take a partition P={0, n1 , n2 , ...., 4n

n }.
4n
Note that n = 4.

The norm of P is defined as ||P|| = maximum( 1≤i≤n ∆xi )

Since ∆xi is always n1 . Hence

||P|| = n1 .
1
Let’s assume a function f(x)= 1+x where x ∈ P.

Take a ck [xk−1 , xk ] , k=1,2,...,4n. So, we can write the Riemann Sum of

function f on partition P as
P4n
S(P, f ) = k=1 f (ck )∆xk
P4n 1 1
S(P, f ) = k=1 (1+ k ) . n

Solution

Theorem (1)
If f is continuous on [a,b],then f is integrable on [a,b].

Theorem (2)
Rb
Let f : [a, b] → R be integrable.Then lim||P||→0 S(P,f)= a f (x)dx.

AAKASH MEHTA (IIITA) UMC April 2, 2019 6/9

Solution

1
We have our f (x) = 1+x which is continuous on [0,4].

By using theorem (1) , we can say that f : [0, 4] → R is integrable.

Also
1
||P|| = n → 0 as n → ∞

Hence our limit becomes as follows:

R4
lim||P||→0 S(P,f) = 0 f (x)dx.

Solution

1 P4n 1
L=limn→∞ n r =1 ( 1+ nr )

= lim||P||→0 S(P,f)
R4
= 0 f (x)dx
R4 1
= 0 1+x dx

= [ln(1 + x)]40

= ln 5 − ln 1

= ln 5

Therefore,
1 1 1
limn→∞ ( n+1 + n+2 + ..... + n+4n ) = ln 5
