Kim, Marlene. “Pay Secrecy and the Gender Wage Gap in the United States.” Industrial

Relations: A Journal of Economy and Society, vol. 54, no. 4, 2015, pp. 648–667.

Author Marlene Kim brings up the topic of pay secrecy, which she believes can have an

impact on how much a man makes compared to a woman. She gives evidence that shows

the possibility that companies can use pay secrecy to hide the amount of money they pay their

male workers compared to their female workers. Statistics that she provided also shows that in

states where pay secrecy is banned the gender wage gap is smaller.

Misra, Joya, and Marta Murray‐Close. “The Gender Wage Gap in the United States and
Cross Nationally.” Sociology Compass, vol. 8, no. 11, 2014, pp. 1281–1295.

In this article written by Joya Misra, she shows the multiple differences as to why there is a wage

gap. Some of her statistics show a discriminatory reason for the wage gap, for example White

men/women earn more on average than there Black, and Latino counterparts, while Asians are

the top earners. She also brings forth the question on whether there should be more legislation

that tackles gender discrimination in the work force. For example, managers might value the

work of male workers over their female counter-parts as author Joan Ackers states in her

research.

This article offers various reason on why a wage gap currently exist. Factors such as age,

which shows older women tend to make less than older males. Race is another factor, Asians

although considered a “minority” make more than any other race. Education also has its impact

on the wage gap, men and women who only had a high school diploma earned more than half of

what their collegiate counter-parts make, but men still were making more in both of these

educational categories. The type of careers men and women choose also show why there is a

wage gap. Men are more likely to get a job in the computer and engineering field which bring a

higher salary than women are likely to be in a administrative profession such as healthcare and

education.

Economic Committee, Congress of the United States, One Hundred Eleventh Congress,

This book consists of multiple statements made by different representatives concerning

evidence that shows the lack of change of the wage gap. Different sentiments are shared by the
representatives based on the evidence they have. Some of them consider the wage gap a tax on

workers who are female. Some look at the wage gap as an image of what men bring to the work

force compared to women. For example, men are likely to participate in a job field like

manufacturing, which has a higher salary compared to a retail sales clerk which is what women

are most likely to participate in.

United States. Women's Bureau, issuing body. Breaking down the Gender Wage Gap. 2010.

This citation details the breakdown of why women are on the lower end of the wage gap.

Some statistics show the earnings of women based on merits such as, higher education,

participation in the labor force, and additional responsibilities in their home.
