Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students are able to see a visual representation of the science experiment they are about to
conduct. The students will then do the science experiment and create their own videos explaining their steps.
They become their own producer.
Representation: Students get to see a video representation of the of the science experiment and then have
the opportunity to be not only a scientist but also a movie producer in this activity. They will have access to
the video on their classroom tablets and I will also play the video to start the science lesson.
Action and Expression: As the students take the role as the scientist, they can use their tablets to refer back
to the big idea given in the video. They will also become a producer for each group to make their own movie
giving and sharing how they created their currents to get the bell to ring.

Lesson idea implementation:

To introduce the science lesson of the day, I would play this video on the board for the whole class to see. I
would then move the students into their science groups to interact with the materials and become a real
scientist. This gives kids a more conceptual understanding of electricity because they are creating it
themselves. The students will jot down notes about their experiment that they would want to share with
others. Once the students have figured the circuit out they will be asked to create their own video to teach
other students about the circuit.
The students get the opportunity to not only learn about the science and see how it works but they also
get to integrate technology into their classroom. The students will use iMovie on their tablets to record and
edit their video tutorial. They will work in groups but need to evaluate each other after completing the
experiment and video to make sure that everyone is contributing. The activity requires a lot of action and

expression by the students which typically keeps kids intrigued about their learning. It is definitely a higher
order thinking task.

Importance of technology:
This lesson would not be nearly as beneficial to the students without a multimedia tool. I would need to give
the students either a step by step of the science experiment or do my own demonstration that they would go
ahead and copy. It also wouldn’t add the extension onto the project of creating their own video which I think
it very exciting and rewarding to them for becoming the scientist. Students have more interest when
technology is used in the classroom.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

When the students are creating their own videos, they will need permission from their parents to publish
them on the internet. It might be that we only show them with other students in the school or I save them
and use them as the introduction for the next group of students. I would need to check in with my county’s
guidelines to make sure that I can publish their videos online as well. If the students are just using iMovie,
they do not have to use anything other then the app of that is more preferable by my school and the parents.
Anytime the internet is involved with students there needs to be supervision by an adult.
Reflective Practice:
Student learning goes above and beyond in this lesson. They are the ones in the science experiment that are
being the scientist and get to produce their own work. This may take place over a couple of days or the
students may blow through it in no time. The iMovie gives me the option to make this a front to back lesson
on electricity all in one. The students get knee deep into the technology by sharing their own findings and
research.
