TedTalk Discussion

This TedTalk was very interesting to watch and I think the approach that Paul Zientarski has
brought into his school has and will continue to make a very large impact on students. Paul
Zientarski was very influential and made a huge impact on me just from the very short video. I
would say that Paul definitely made a very compelling argument. Children deserve to live
healthier lives, and they most definitely do not deserve us taking their time away from their
physical activity. I think we need to learn to embrace and provide more time of physical activity
with our students in order for them to live healthier as well as succeed at higher rates in their
classes. If I were to recommend this video to anyone, I would recommend it to all school faculty
and administration all over the world. As educators and future educators, we need to have the
best interest in our students, which means we need to push them to do and to be their best. If the
school I plan to teach adopted Paul Zientarski's approach to teaching physical education, I would
definitely support it. I want to watch my students grow in every way possible. If I can add to
their growth physically and academically by putting in a little more of my own effort, then that is
what I will do!

Children definitely do deserve healthier lives and that’s in our hands. Children don’t know any
better and they look to us for guidance. We should be their role models and follow a healthy
lifestyle ourselves and also make sure we implement physical activity in their lives. I feel as
though even as a math teacher you can find a way to get the students moving and being
involved physically.

Lillian,
I like how you said we need to have the best interest in our students and push them to do their
best. Paul pointed out the brain scans in the video of students sitting quietly in class and then
brain scans after a 20-minute walk. Obviously getting them active and on their feet will help
them and even motivate them to learn. I think this approach would help students and even
teachers and I am with you if that’s how it will help students grow and learn and stay healthy
then that’s what we should all do!

I agree that it really is up to us as classroom teachers to make physical activity a priority in our
daily teaching. This can be done with organized games at recess and with brain breaks
throughout our academic teaching times. I have found that when my PreK students are not
performing up to expectations during academic times they are in need of movement. It works!

Penny I really agree that a teacher can probably get much more out of the student if we take
their focus away from the assignment for a minute. It is also fun, and the kids love to do this. I
have found that if my younger students are not focusing this is always a great thing to do. I feel
that if physical education was a priority in high school, I might have been a little more active
and not so stiff now.

Good point! It really will and does impact the well-being of the kids to help them in their future.
I think it's a great thing that we could all incorporate in our classrooms in the future to help our
students do their best in their life!

Lillian, I also enjoyed watching Paul Zientarski's TedTalk. I think his approach to physical
education is an impacting one as well, and it has proven to be beneficial for children. Not only
does his program help children grow physically and helps improve their health, it also helps
them academically with various school subjects. Both are equally important, and I would
definitely help my students to do their best in every area.
