Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Multiple Means of Representation: The students will be receiving information from different peers using
verbal and visual representations of the information.
Multiple Means of Engagement: The students are engaged throughout the whole process of this activity. They
are going to be collecting information, creating their video, presenting, and completing a feedback activity
while their peers are presenting.
Multiple Means of Action and Expression: The students are given the criteria necessary for them to know, but
they are given full freedom of how they create their video and presentation.
Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will compile a list of important events or people from 1950-1970. This list will include: Brown
vs. Board of Education, Montgomery Bus Boycott, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., Civil Rights Act,
March on Washington, Voting Rights Act, Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, and Lyndon B. Johnson. Each
student will be assigned one topic from this list. They will be creating a presentation about the topic that they
have been assigned to. The students will be researching their topic in class and compiling key information
about the event/person and the way it affected society at the time and in present day. The project will consist
of a presentation of this information. A key component of this presentation is creating a video that highlights
their topic. This video can be used as an introduction, body component, or conclusion to their presentation.
The students will have ample time to collect this information and create their video. I would allot t wo days
to research and one day for presentations. Once the students have completed their presentation, they will be
presenting them to the class. The students can create any other supports that they choose for their
presentation, such as a poster or a handout, but the video must be included. While a student is presenting,
the class will be writing down five important things that they learned from each presentation. This ensures
that the students are engaged and learning from the student presentations. The teacher will be grading the
students based on the content of their presentation.

Importance of technology:
Technology is a critical component of this activity, as the video is to serve as a key portrayal of information for
the students. They will also be using technology to obtain their information for this presentation rather than a
textbook. Using technology in this activity allows students to explore and create a product to portray their
knowledge.

Inspiration (optional): I did not borrow any information for this lesson idea.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Internet safety and privacy should be the highest priority for the teacher during this assignment. The students
will be using the internet to research their topics and find images/videos to include in their video
presentation. The parents should be notified of this project prior to introducing it to the stude nts to ensure
that they are comfortable with their students using the internet for this assignment. To ensure internet
safety, the teacher can have the students use student-friendly educational cites, such as BrainPop, to obtain
their information. They will also use Pixabay to find appropriate, copyright free images.

Reflective Practice:
This activity allows students to explore the information independently as well as learning from their peers.
They will have the time to research and become an expert on their assigned topic, then learn through the
presentations of their peers. I feel that this is an interesting change from learning from the teacher. Learning
from their peers can make the experience more engaging and relatable for the students. Overall, this
assignment allows for exploratory learning and a positive learning experience for the class.
