Warm Up
Take a look at the
map to the right.
These are colonies in
1900.

What do you think

changed in the
Americas - where did
the colonies go?

What about in Africa?

Where did these
colonies come from?

What’s going on in
Warm Up
What comes to mind when you
hear the word “colonialism”?
What does it make you think of?
What examples of colonialism can
you think of? (Think of colonialism
= colonization = colonies)

What do you think when you hear

the word “imperialism”? Is it the
same as colonialism? Why or why
not? (Think of imperialism =
empire)

What does a nation need in order

Colonialism vs. Imperialism
● Colonization - a strong country conquers and rules
over a weaker area. People may move to the new
area and settle down there, becoming the ruling
group.
○ Ex. British Colonies in America
● Imperialism - a stronger country conquers a weaker
region in order to create an empire by expanding
their control into neighboring areas as well. They
may not colonize, sometimes ruling from the
Simulation
In your groups, decide who will draw straws for your team.

Group 1: Great Britain Group 2: Nigeria

Group 3: India Group 4: Hawaii

Each group has different trading cards. These are worth a lot to anybody
trying to build an empire, but the ultimate goal is capital (money).
Empires need resources, labor, and technology to sustain themselves, but
they also need capital to get these things.

In your groups, trade with others to try to build up your empire as best you
can. The most capital is the goal, but you will lose capital if you don’t
have enough labor, resources, or technology to keep growing and
expanding.
Empire Simulation: Round 1
Great Britain: 36 Capital, 6 Technology, 4 Boom

Nigeria: 12 Resources, 12 Labor, 2 Technology

Hawaii: 18 Resources, 6 Labor, 2 Technology

India: 6 Resources, 18 Labor, 2 Technology

Resources, labor, and technology are necessary to keep your capital up!
If you have too little of any of the three, you will start to lose capital, so
be strategic and avoid getting exploited or taken advantage of.

Remember, the goal is to wind up with the most capital while

gaining resources, labor, and technology!
Empire Simulation: Round 2
Great Britain: 18 C, 17 L, 8 R, 5 T - 5 T, 16 C, 18 L, 15 R

Nigeria: 1 T, 9 C, 10 R, 7 L - 10 R, 4 L, 6 C, 3 T

Hawaii: 12 R, 7 C, 2 T, 5 L - 11 C, 6 R, 11 L, 2 T

India: 7 L, 6, R, 5 C, 4 T - 11 C, 3 R, 6 L, 4 T

Resources, labor, and technology are necessary to keep your capital up!
If you have too little of any of the three, you will start to lose capital, so

Empire Simulation: Reflection
How were colonial or empirical
countries able to exploit and
dominate regions of the world?

What consequences or
implications might their spread of
control bring?

What could happen when two or

more colonial powers meet at their
“borders”? What if they run into
each other?
Watch this Khan Academy video for more
information on Imperialism and Colonialism!
