Teaching practicum is the link between theory and practice.
It is a real exercise and the first
step of my teaching career. I learned teaching experiences from this practicum which included teaching skills and how to deal with the relationship between students. As the foundation of my future teaching, the practicum allowed me to explore the gap between what I thoughts and what does the classroom need in real which guided me to make full preparations for my future teaching. Time flies, a semester practicum is over. Looking back on my practicum, I found it both busy and fulfilling. Although it was hard work, I enjoyed it very much. My practicum placement was at a language school for ESL students where I as a learner and a teacher and had an opportunity to worked with the most respected professor. I gained a lot of knowledge that I had not learned from books when I worked with such experiences and knowledgeable professor. In this practicum, I was able to see how to put theory into a classroom with first-hand and gave me many opportunities to teach as well. What changed me most in this practicum was that pay attention to what students learned rather than what teachers taught, which is a problem that most novel teachers tend to overlook. When I first taught in the classroom, I skipped through some of the important knowledge to teach my students in order to complete my planned teaching objectives. As a result, the students were confused about what I taught, leading to more questions in class and delaying the class. I realized that my problems through discussed with my mentor teacher and liaison after my class. In addition, from observed the professor’s class, I find that he always slows down his pace in his class and gave the students more time to keep practicing and listening to their feedback about their learning. Therefore, instead of appreciating your lesson plan alone, it is my responsibility to try my best to make the students understand what I am teaching. From this practicum I also realized that the relationship with students is very important, you may not guarantee to like every student of yours, but students don’t learn from people they don’t like. we can do some simple things like seeking first to understand as apposed be being understood, and simple things like apologizing. We should believe that all the students are champions, even if they are terrible. What we need to do is to connect with them and help them build their confidence. Teaching and learning should bring joy. The teachers who will never give up their students and they understand the power of connection and insist that their students become the best that they can possibly be.
