Seaweed is one of the fisheries commodities could been increase rural farm
incomes, absorb labors and increase foreign exchanges. Potential development of
seaweed culture in South Sulawesi has not yet been optimally explored. There is a
wide opportunity of seaweed both to increase production and export. The demand
for seaweed also increases over time. However, farmers are still facing problem of
low income earning from the seaweed culture that is being produced in the
villages of Mangarabombang (Laikang, Punaga, Pattoppakang, Bontoparang and
Panyangkalang),due to marketing problems, i.e. low price received by farmers
that cause low income earning from seaweed culture. The objectives of the
research were (1) to analyze the performance of seaweed marketing systems in
term of market structure, conduct, and marketing performance, (2) to identify the
institutional support of seaweed marketing, and (3) to identify the policy
implication in term of seaweed marketing systems. The research was carried out
from March to May 2009, involving 150 respondents out of the total 1.500
seaweed farmers in five villages of Mangarabombang sub-district. The analysis
method was Structure Conduct and Performance (SCP). The results showed that
the market structure of seaweed was oligopsony. The supporting component of
institutional formation has not been well organized; therefore, its function has not
optimal yet. In this connection, there is a need to generate farmer’s groups to
improve it farmers’ negotiation power and to co-operate with institution providing
assistance in developing seaweed marketing.
