What Kind of Curriculum Designs influence mostly the K-12 Curriculum?

Curriculum is useless not unless it is implemented; part of the implementation process is

to decide what particular curriculum design will be used. There are actually a lot of models of
curriculum to be considered, each one of them has its own strength and weaknesses. Others are
almost a copy of one with only one or two differences.
For me, K-12 curriculum was influenced mostly by Subject-Centered and Learner-
Centered Curriculum designs.

Why subject-centered? Subjects are taught from the simplest concepts to more
complicated concepts through grade levels in spiral progression. As early as elementary, students
gain knowledge in areas such as Biology, Geometry, Earth Science, Chemistry, and Algebra. This ensures
a mastery of knowledge and skills after each level.

For example, currently in High School, Biology is taught in 2nd Year, Chemistry in 3rd
Year and Physics in 4th Year. In K to 12, these subjects are connected and integrated from
Grades 7 to 10. This same method is used in other Learning Areas like Math.

Why learner-centered? The K to 12 curriculum is standard- and competence-based. It is

inclusive and built around the needs of the learners and the community. It aims for holistic
development and acquisition of 21st century skills. Instructional design and curriculum design is
dependent on what kind of learners we have and the current trend in society.

There is no single best curriculum design or instructional design that will fit to the
Philippine Education system. Ours can be compared into a kare-kare dish, composed of different
ingredients (different curriculum design) perfectly mixed together in a pan (our society) to
satisfy the taste buds of every Filipino learner.
