Renault Tuner list head unit AUX iput

Warning: You are doing this on your own risk! You need to have advanced electrical knowlenge and skills, because we are going to modify the Head Unit’s circuit. Operation is quite simple, but it’s not like „solder two wires“, so you have to consider, if you can do it. Circuit contains ATMEL AVR micro-controller. You have to have buddy, who can program the MCU, or you need to know, how to do it :) If you are not able to do it, ask for somebody, who is OR it’s possible to not use MCU, but you will only have MONO sound.

This tutorial is NOT for You, IF:

-You have Head Unit made before 2000 -If you have casette radio -If you have UPDATE List. Then, you have to buy a cheap reduction cable and it’s done This Tutorial IS for you, if you have Tuner List, mostly in Megane 2, Clio, Laguna, etc.

you have Tuner List, mostly in Megane 2, Clio, Laguna, etc. Aux Input for Tuner List

Aux Input for Tuner List is well discussed topic on the internet and it mostly concludes, that AUX input is IMPOSSIBLE to do in Tuner List, you have to use Xcarlink or FM Transmitter. Xcarlink is

expensive,if the AUX is enough for You, and FM Tuner is shitty less then 10.

You can easily do a AUX input in

A little bit of boring theory

necessary to search circuit for analog signal ways, BEFORE DSP procesor, that does volume control, equalizer, input switching etc. Tuner list uses SAA7708H, that contains all of these functions, most important is input switching. Now, I recommend to find and open datasheet of this IC, I will refer to it later.

Generally, if you want to add AUX input to any radio, there is

As we see, IC contains many of various inputs, but sadly, in Tuner List, we

As we see, IC contains many of various inputs, but sadly, in Tuner List, we can use only digital inputs S/PDIF for CD, only AM and FM radio inputs are analogue. So, yes, we will hack them :)

Using of AM radio inputs is bullshit, it sounds like

this is a little problem. As we see, we did not have FM_L and FM_R inputs, but only FM_MPX input.

MPX is a complex FM radio signal, that contains both L and R channels, STEREO pilot signal and also RDS, all in one signal. We can made an encoder, that create MPX signal from Left and Right channel signal, and this is

what we are going to do

can study a lot on the internet.

like an AM radio

We will use FM input. And

Goal of this tutorial is not to describe, how STEREO encoding works, you

So let’s do it. Like I said, this tutorial is for advanced users, so don’t expect a detailed photo. Disassembly the Head Unit, give away a CD drive, and search SAA7708H IC on motherboard.

Firstly, find a PIN nr. 80, naimed FM_MPX (screenshot from datasheet will help you). Look

Firstly, find a PIN nr. 80, naimed FM_MPX (screenshot from datasheet will help you). Look for

a ways on PCB, you should find a SMD resistor with 0 OMH value, marked by 1 on photo.

CAREFULY solder it out. We need to use a switching relay. Middle contact of relay, connect on place marked 3. Contact, that is switched on in „non-active“ relay state, connect to point 2. At „hot“ point of relay, we will connect a MPX signal. Use as short cables, as possible. Also, you have to use a very small relay, or it can collide with CD-ROM. Then, a VERY important thing. Head Unit uses Squelch function, that uses various functions to hide

noise on received radio signal. For using AUX input, we have to dissable this function, because even if we activate AUX, radio is still tuned on last radio station and it’s signal strenght will have affect on our aux signal. So, find a pin nr. 3 (LEVEL) and short it with pin 74 (VDDA 1). It’s a red wire on photo. DON’t do it like me, use a relay for switching this :) Having a squelch function, when

receiving FM is a good thing

a shielded wire for MPX input and any wire to relay coil, get wires outside head unit and you can

assembly it.

So, when this is done, fit our relay to motherboard with glue, use

NOW, we have 2 options. If the mono sound is enough for us, use a shielded wire for mono-audio input. When you connect relay coil to 12V, radio will switch from FM radio to AUX input. It’s up to you, how to do switching. I used a jack plug with integraded switch. It’s good to have a 12V, which is present only when the head unit is on. You can find it on GREEN wire to head unit’s ISO connector.

IMPORTANT: FM radio uses pre-emphasis and de-emphasis, which is equalization of high frequencies in signal. We have to set equalizer on our player to respect this curve:

If you don’t do it, sound will be bad. For Europe, use 50uS. If the

If the mono is not enough for You, the continue reading :) Like I said, we have to use stereo encoder to „merge“ L and R audio signal to MPX signal. Encoder is not from my head, it’s a part of FM stereo transmitter, described HERE:

OUR schematic is a little bit different, it looks like this:

Circuit is simple, I made it on a peace of unniversal PCB. Program for MCU is located here:

ER%20CIRCUIT.html. If you are not able to obtain ATTiny 12, you can use ATtiny 2313. It has no a same pinout, everything is described on site, I linked, so read and learn ;-)

For good function of encoder, you have to keep wire from encoder to head unit. 12V for encoder is good to connect to green wire of radio connectors, again. Also we have to set equalizer, same as for MONO operation. Encoder reuires a very high input level of signal. Most cell phones and MP3 players have low output volume, so volume on head unit must be set on higher valuse, then on FM radio. Good luck :)

IMPORTANT: It’s necessary to turn of AF function, while listening to AUX. You can do it in Expert Mode. Just hold SOURCE button to get to the expert mode and set AF to OFF.
