Reader Summary

Reader: Dechuna S.
Grade: Third
Tutor: Lottie Freese
Date: May 1st, 2019

Quantitative Summary:

For the final work session, I conducted two different running records. The first assessment was
an instruction level 22, which the Dechuna scored 96% accuracy with limited comprehension,
had no self-corrections and 85 words correct per minute. The next one was frustration level 23,
with 92% accuracy, limited comprehension, no self-corrections and 58 words correct per minute.
The words correct per minute from both assessments, showed that Dechuna scored in the 25th
percentile, according to the oral reading fluency norms, which is low for third grade in the
spring.

Qualitative Summary:

At the instructional level, Dechuna made substitutions, such as “drive” for “dive”. These
substitutions did not maintain the meaning of the text but she is substituting a noun for a noun, so
the syntax is preserved. Similar to the first assessment I conducted with Dechuna, she did not
make any insertions, but omitted words which disrupted the meaning of the passage. While
reading, she read fast, ignoring the punctuation of the text. In February, she fluctuated between
reading slow and fast and would skip sentences. However, during this final assessment, Dechuna
was able to read line after line, and did not skip any sentences. When coming to words that were
unfamiliar to Dechuna, she did not ask for help and replaced it with a word that sounded similar.
Like the first assessment, she was reluctant to try and pronounce the word out loud. Throughout
the entire text, she did not use any variation in her voice. Overall, I scored her fluency integration
a 2 on a four-point scale. Dechuna was able to comprehend the text and read some of the reading
fluently, but there was very little evidence of her reading consistently through rate, phrasing,
pausing, intonation, and stress.

During the retell of the story, Dechuna was able to tell me information that happened in the text
but not in order. She started with key facts that occurred at the end of the text. She was able to
identify the overall main idea and could recall some smaller details. I did prompt her thinking by
asking her some questions. Overall, she received a 6 on her retelling at the instructional level.

Reader Summary:
While observing Dechuna, it was apparent that she feels more confident in her reading. Despite
her not making any self-corrections during this final assessment like she did in February, her
substitutions were very similar to the correct word. In addition, she was monitoring her reading
more thoroughly than she did before. Dechuna has matured as a reader over these past few
months and continues to work hard on her reading skills. Although she is still at the same
instructional text level, Dechuna has greatly improved on her reading confidence. Throughout
our sessions, we have expanded her knowledge on plants survival and adaptation. Dechuna did
not have much prior background knowledge on these concepts before, but she informed me that
she had a high interest in plants. Due to that interest, her engagement level, for the most part, was
consistently high during each of our sessions. Since our first assessment, Dechuna has developed
a stronger understanding of many different reading and comprehension strategies such as
predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing. The main goal I set for Dechuna in
February, was for her to focus on monitoring her reading. Overall, through the sessions spent
together and during her final assessment, Dechuna has been able to monitor her reading more
thoroughly. I hope to see Dechuna continue to succeed and deepen her reading skills.
