ART.M.III.K.3
Describe the music performed and presented in 1st grade by moving, drawing, or through other appropriate responses.

Objectives (I can statements):

● I can relate my emotions to each song.
● I can represent my emotions of each song by moving to a certain emoji.
● I can explain why I have that certain emotion in relation to each song.

Assessment (Formative, Summative): (ie. thumbs up/down, exit ticket, quiz, chapter test, rubric (attach if appropriate), etc.)
Formative: Assessing the students will be done through watching which emoji the students pick, as well as their explanation as to
why they chose that emoji.

Introduction/Hook/Anticipatory Set/Activating Prior Knowledge: (Warm-up, review of previous day’s lesson, check for
understanding of previous knowledge, questions you will ask)
“Good Afternoon Class! Today we are going to be listening to a couple of songs and describing how they make us feel
through the use of emojis.”

Steps in the lesson:

I Do: To start off this lesson we will explain what the students will have to do (stated in the Introduction). We will then
point out the five emojis taped to the cabinets around the room. We will also mention how some people might feel
different emotions than they do to the same song and that’s ok. Then, we will play a part of a song to the students as
an example and we will walk around the room and stand under the emoji that represents our emotion. After that, we
will ask for a volunteer to ask one of us why we chose that emotion.

We Do: After demonstrating the activity, we will do it as a class once to make sure the students understand the
directions.

You Do: We will play a series of song clips and allow the class to move to the emoji that expresses the emotion they
felt. After each song clip is played, we will discuss how the song made us feel and what it might remind us of.
Closure/Wrap up: This may be in the form of independent practice, a chance to share, or explicit restatement of the goals of the lesson.

Today we learned about how music makes us feel. We used emojis to show how we felt. What song made you want to
dance? What song made you feel sad? What song made you excited?

Extension Activities:
Some extension activities include using emoji cards while a song clip is playing, drawing what a song makes you feel or
telling a story about what is happening in the music.

Accommodation /Modification:
Specific Student/Group:
Students with auditory impairments will be accommodated for with a visual aid that shows the musical dynamics and
changes in beat and rhythm. Students with visual impairments will be paired with another student to guide them to the
emotion they feel.

Differentiation:
What will I differentiate? Content Process Product Environment
Explain: We will differentiate this lesson in content if it is used multiple times throughout the year by playing different
music each time. Additionally, we will build on the content that has already been taught by elaborating on other
objectives such as learning about different cultures.

How will I differentiate? For readiness By interest Learning profiles Ability level Affect
Explain: We will differentiate this lesson according to interests by incorporating music that may already be familiar to
the students. We will also differentiate by ability level if we are dealing with a range of students in various grade levels.

Diversity:
We will be touching on Diversity by using songs that come from different countries.

Technology:
For Technology, we will be using a computer to pull up the songs and a projector so the students can see the title of
the song.
