Lesson Plan Template

Date: April 17th, 2019 Teacher’s Name: Ms. Salvatore

Subject: Mathematics Grade level: 7th
Class Setting: 7th grade core mathematics general education class
Length of lesson: 45 minutes

Central Focus: Students previously learned the difference between a population and a sample
as well as how to generate a representative sample from a population. In this lesson students
will be creating and analyzing dot plots that represent data from a sample of a population in
order to draw inferences about the population.
Lesson Title: Drawing Inferences from Data

Essential Question(s): How do we draw inferences from data gathered from samples of a
population?

Learning Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.SP.A.2
Use data from a random sample to draw inferences about a population with an unknown
characteristic of interest. Generate multiple samples (or simulated samples) of the same
size to gauge the variation in estimates or predictions.

Pre-Assessment: In the previous lesson, students learned how to generate a representative
sample from a population and to generate data. In this lesson students will be analyzing the
data to draw inferences.
Learning Objectives: Assessments:
Students will create and analyze dot plots in Group work Activity - Students will create a
order to draw inferences from data. dot plot and make an inference from the
data provided.

Homework - Students will answer questions

based on a dot plot and make an inference
from the data.

Differentiation: Students are seated in either groups of 4 or 5 that are teacher determined
groups. Students will have multiple opportunities to work together during this lesson in order
to share ideas and be able to work together through a problem. During the group activity,
before students begin I will help students begin the set up the dot plot. This is for my struggling
math students who need this help in order to get them started with the group activity. All work
will be modeled on the board for students to follow along and students are encouraged to ask
questions. New vocabulary word are clearly defined for students as well as old vocabulary
words for struggling students who may not remember what these words meant. The students
math notebooks also serve as a tool for students. Students are easily able to find notes from
the previous lesson that will help them with this lesson as math is always building.
Academic Language: Vocabulary- inference, mean, median, language functions- analyzing data
to draw inferences about a sample, syntax- constructing dot plots, and discourse - discussing
and explaining to one another the inference they drew from the data.

Procedure:
Anticipatory Set
1. Students will complete the do now which is to make a conclusion based on data
provided to them. The do now will be presented on the smart board as well as on the
student desks (worksheet 1). Students will be provided with poster paper and can
complete this do now with a partner or in group of 3’s.
2. Groups of students will share the conclusions that they are discussed based on the data
with their partner(s).

Initial Phase
1. I will model for students on the chalkboard as well as on the smart board how to
represent this data with a dot plot.
2. We will discuss conclusions that can be made from the dot plot.
3. Go over the AIM: “How do we draw inferences from data gathered from samples of a
population?”
4. Discuss new vocabulary (inference) and old vocabulary that will be needed in this lesson
(mean and median). Students will be provided with the vocabulary on worksheet 2
which they will glue in their math notebooks.

Middle Phase
1. Students will be provided with worksheet 3. Students will complete this activity with a
partner or in groups of 3’s. Students will be provided with data. They will create a dot
plot from the data, make an inference from the dot plot, and explain if the mean and
median of the data support their inference.
2. Students will do this poster paper provided and we will discuss each part after students
have had a chance to work on this.

Concluding Phase
1. Students will be provided with the homework which is a worksheet with a dot plot
provided to students. Students will answer specific questions where they must be able
to accurately read a dot plot and make an inference from the data provided.

Follow up: Worksheet - students will answer questions based on a dot plot provided to them
and make an inference from the data.
Materials: glue, math notebooks, worksheets 1-3, homework worksheet, google slides
presentation, poster paper, markers, pencils
