AIM: How do we draw inferences from data
gathered from samples of a population?
Ms. Salvatore (Period 6 and 7)
New Vocabulary:
● An inference is a conclusion made by interpreting data.
● An inference is valid if it is based on a representative sample, and there is enough
data to support it.

Review of Vocabulary:
● Mean - The total of the sum of all the values, divided by the number of values.
● Median - The middle number in a list of numbers ordered from lowest to highest.
In a carnival game, players get 5 chances to throw a basketball through a hoop. Of the 20 players
surveyed, 2 players made 0 baskets, 3 players made 1 basket, 4 players made 2 baskets, 4 players made 3
baskets, 4 players made 4 baskets, and 3 players made 5 baskets.

A. Make a dot plot to represent the data above.

B. Make an inference by looking at the shape of the data.

Players will score between 2 and 4 baskets.

C. What is the median of the data? What is the mean? Do these measures of center support the
inference you made in part A?
Median = 3
Mean = 2.7
