GEAR UP Summer STEAM Camp

Presented by FSCJ

We are so excited to offer students the opportunity to participate in GEAR UP STEAM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Camp for the Summer of 2019 at our FSCJ Campuses/Centers.
Camp is FREE of charge. There are 5 weeks of camp for the students to choose from. Each week of
camp will have a different STEAM based theme. There are 40 seats available for each camp session.

June 10-14 Pop Culture: Planet of the Capes Kent Campus

Exploring the superhero in culture through literature, film, television and media.

June 17-21 Health Science Career Exploration North Campus

Hands-on exploration for those interested in health/medical careers.

June 24-28 Programming BYTES Advanced Technology Ctr/Downtown

Computer programming to include an introduction to Raspberry Pi/Python and cyber security.

July 8-12 Flying High: Aviation Cecil Center

Learn more about flight and aviation careers from actual pilots.

July 22-26 YUM! The Science of Food Advanced Technology Ctr/Downtown

Camp is available to any current, on grade-level 8th grader (rising 9th grader in Summer 2019) who
attends one of the following middle schools: Arlington, Gilbert, Ribault, Northwestern, Highlands,
Englewood, Dupont, Jeff Davis, JEB Stuart or Lakeshore.

Camp will be held Monday-Friday of the designated week. Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m.-9 a.m..
Camp will start promptly at 9 a.m. and last until 12:30 p.m. At 12:30 p.m., lunch will be served.
Students will then get on their bus or be picked up by the parent/guardian between 1:30 p.m. and 2
p.m. We are hoping to have a significant field trip on the Friday of each camp week; students will need
to attend camp 3 of the 4 days that week to participate in the field trip. Field trip details for each week
will be available at a later date along with specifics on time and location. These field trips will most
likely be a full day event. Breakfast, lunch and a snack will be served during camp.

Students will have the opportunity to choose which camp week they would like to attend. They will rank
the camp weeks 1-5 on the application with 1 being their top choice. Placement into seats in the camp
will be on a first-come-first-served basis. A student who is unable to attend a week of camp due to
other commitments should just leave that week of camp blank. Students will only attend one week of
camp. If there are cancellations or openings, students may be invited to participate in a 2nd week.
Consideration will be granted in the order that applications are received.
FSCJ will provide limited transportation for camp. Locations for pick-up/drop-off have yet to be
finalized. Most likely we will use a high school site as the central site for the designated side of town.
Bus pick up will be around 8 a.m. Specific information will be provided to families closer to the camp
start date. Parents/Guardians are also allowed to drop their student off/pick up at the host campus as
early as 8 a.m. Pick-up from campus will be no later than 2 p.m. Bus drop-off will be around 2 p.m.

Completed applications can be dropped off in the GEAR UP rooms at the schools or scanned and
emailed to ali.hicks@fscj.edu. Parent/Guardian signatures must be included.

Students will be contacted in May regarding the week of camp they have the opportunity to attend. A
parent/guardian orientation meeting will also be announced at this time.

Any questions can be directed to Ms. Ali Hicks with FSCJ at ali.hicks@fscj.edu
