3. Course Description
Modern civilization cannot live without petroleum and petrochemical. Commodities manufactured from petrochemical, such as plastics, rubbers and
synthetics fibers derived from petroleum have become part and parcel of our daily life. Future crude oil will be heavier and contaminated with unwanted
salts and metals, which will make production and processing costlier than ever before. After the course, the students would be able to understand the
importance of petrochemical processes in gas and oil industry, as well as the chemical fundaments involved. The course will be focused in crude oil and
its composition, physical properties, exploration oil field development and oil production processes. Also, petroleum products and their uses in common
life, processing operation and instrumentation and control in a refinery will be discussed.
4. Course´s Contribution to professional training
The content of the course has been prepared to provide a holistic working knowledge for future engineers about petroleum and petrochemical
technology. Knowledge on essential preliminaries for the exploration and production of crude petroleum oil and gas, analysis of crude oil and petroleum
products, fundamentals of lubricating oil and grease and common interest to engineers in refineries and petrochemical plants are important in the
formation of engineering students.
5. Course objectives
“To educate students to understand petrochemical processes commonly used in gas and oil industries, and the importance of the petrochemical
products and all engineering and chemical fundaments involved”.

6. Course´s learning results (according to the Learning Outcomes of the Major)

- Understand the importance of petrochemical industry and the processes involved.
- Understand processing and operations in petrochemical industry.
-Understand the definition of petrochemical compounds and their uses in common life.
- Understand the importance of instrumentation and control in refineries.

7. Competencies that students developed in the course

General Competence
- To educate students about processes in gas and oil industries and their principles, as well as the main products their uses.
Specific Competences
- Knowledge in the fundaments of oil crude oil and its components.
- Knowledge in petrochemical processes and gas and oil industries, processing operation in petroleum refinery.
- Knowledge in the obtaining of petrochemical products and their uses.
- Knowledge in the instrumentation and control in refineries and petrochemical industries.
