Copper coins of the Low Countries, France, Spain, and Portugal by Michael Robinson based on the work
of Josef Neuman
Las Monedas Espanolas Desde D. Pelayo (718) A Juan Carlos I (1980) by Juan R. Cayon and Carlos
Castan
Notes:
This is obviously a work in progress, but these checklist lines are based on the references above and
internet research. While I feel very confident about the coinage for the “Reaper’s War” period, I realize
that I do not have the resources to fully complete the checklist for the period prior to 1600 regarding
local copper coinages of senyals and pugesas. This might be more completely covered using Crusafont’s
book on local coinages which I do not own.
Division of Reaper War issues is not based on date, but more by the issuing entity. There is no clear cut
set of dates for these issues, as each town coinage changed based on who was the current ruler, and these
did not all change hands at the same time. The heading for Republic of Catalonia comes from internet
research, as this was declared early in the year 1641. By the end of 1641 the people realized that they
needed additional support, which brought the French into the picture. Coins listed only under the
Republic of Catalonia have a legend that states “Principat Catal” or some form of this legend. It will
become readily obvious that the three periods: Under Spanish Control, Republic of Catalonia, and
Republic of Catalonia under French Protection often overlap which creates a lack of finality to these
checklist lines. Many of the new lines for Republic of Catalonia are silver pieces of 1641-1642 that are
exceedingly rare and very high priced compared to the copper coins from the period.
Balearic Islands lines are based on the fact that the coins of Majorca have this name in the legend and
the pieces listed here have Balearic Islands (or part of this name) in the legend.
Some of the pieces from Aragon have been moved down to Zaragoza simply to be consistent with the lines
of Valencia and how C&C and Krause classify the coins.
Terms Necessity Issue and Emergency coinage for Tortosa, Tarragona, Lerida, Gerona, Majorca,
Balearic Islands comes from the Davenport Books on Crowns and Talers.
