WORKSHOP
Six Sigma, Lean and the Theory of Constraints

1. What does Six Sigma do for an organization? How does it work?

R- The six sigma is based on the use of statistical tools, to be able to define the
changes and variations in all the processes, in which the management has the
power to change the processes.
- This methodology has 5 steps that are define, measure, analyze, improve
and control
- - Define: the practitioners defining the process, and asking what the clients
are and what their problems are, and the key elements of the processes
- - Measure: define a measurement system for the data that is collected
- - Analyze: the collected data is analyzed to provide information about the
processes and find the causes of the problems
- - Improve: in this case it is to change the processes or steps in the
processes that generate delays, and in this step you can define if the
changes were correct or another analysis is needed for more changes
- - Control: in this step the necessary changes have already been defined,
and what is done in tracking and thus show that these changes were
correct.

2- What is Lean thinking? What are the five essential steps?

R- Lean thinking is to start measuring all the processes of a company in order to

obtain data continuously, in order to identify tasks that do not add value and delay
the processes and thus all resources are focused on continuous improvement and
in the customer satisfaction. This thought has 5 steps or principles:
1- Identify value: identify the product or service required by the client to
arrive at the solution that the client wants or needs
2- Identify the value stream: review processes and identify which can be
eliminated, if required.
3- Improve flow: after eliminating the different steps that do not add real
value in the processes, a fluid process is created that optimizes all the
resources.
4- Allow customer pull: after eliminating unnecessary tasks and have a good
flow in the processes, you can have the ability to produce what is strictly
necessary or requested by the client, without relying on sales forecasts.
5- Work toward perfection: maintain these processes optimally, and improve
as much as possible in their processes.
3- What is the focus of the Theory of Constraints? How does it improve a
system?

R- Theory of restrictions is based on defining each company as a whole,

regardless of what area it belongs to, and thus be able to add all the efforts in a
single whole, and be able to reach the goal that is the satisfaction of the client,
additionally in this theory is essentially defined in defining not only what should be
done, but also what is not what should be done. TOC concentrates on the process
that slows the speed of product through the system.
- Identify: each link of the chain is identified the amount of work and its
indicators, to know their restrictions or problems in processes.
- Exploit: after identifying the restriction, the best solution is sought to exploit its
maximum capacity without updates or costly changes.
- Subordinate: sometimes some individual processes are sacrificed so that they
are less fast, but this in order to optimize a macro process and that the final result
is the expected and improved.
- Elevate: if the changes made are not satisfactory, this requires additional
changes, these changes may be larger, which implies capital and / or time
investments.
- Repeat: once the changes in the processes are established and it is identified
that this change was to improve, the cycle is repeated in the different processes of
the entire company.

4- Based on your project, choose one of the methodologies for your

organization and clearly support why you chose it.

R- In my project I think that I would choose the lean theory of thought, since it
seems to me that it is the most complete, and it is the one that could improve
each one of the processes, since for example in the company where I am working
at this moment , it would be a good method to be able to identify all the steps of
the processes we handle and thus be able to identify what is being done well, what
processes are over and therefore which we could eliminate.
