CHAPTER I

Rationale

Mathematics is defined in many different aspects which is being used in many

educational programs and courses. It helps various students who are taking up

Engineering, Information Technology (IT) and many others. Despite of these, it

somehow affected students studies in school. Teachers in Mathematics want their

students to strive harder to be able to pass the subject. According to the National

Academic of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, Mathematics is the key to

opportunities. No longer just the language of Science, Mathematics now contributes in

direct and fundamental ways in disciplines like; Business, Finance, Health and define,

(NRC,1989). Mathematics is commonly used in most fields nowadays, which makes it a

must study subject. Learning Mathematics somehow affects the students' perspective

towards their chosen field of work. Mathematics has been affecting students' studies

and attributes due to the fact that Mathematics is a very complex subject. As a result,

the researchers would like to conduct the study to be able to change the student's

negative insights towards Mathematics as a subject.

The study aims to determine the students' insights on Mathematics and know why they

are struggling on the subject. This study is to be conducted to Senior High School

students' of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) during the

school year 2018-2019 in University of Cebu Lapu-lapu and Mandaue (UCLM) at the

Annex 2, third floor. The researcher would like to conduct this study in order for the

students to improve more and avoid hating Mathematics and would like to know their

views on Mathematics if it is easy, average or hard for them. This study will explore the

students' insights on , their struggles on the subject will explore the students' insights

on Mathematics, their struggles on the subject and propose interventions based on the

findings. The basis of this study will be the "Daily Problem Solving Tutorials".

The conceptions, attitudes and expectations of the students regarding Mathematics

and the way it is being taught in school has been considered to be the very significant

factor underlying their school experience and achievement (Bovasi, 1990; Shoenfeld,

1989). The close relationship between students' views on Mathematics and their views

on beliefs affected how they behave in learning situations, which in turn affect the way

they learn Mathematics (Frank, 1988; Sangter, 1992)

The level of Mathematics in Senior High School is a lot difficult since many students

failed in the subject and most of them will be taking up summer classes on the subject.

Senior High School is a stage where students will be prepared for college. Students'

views on Mathematics affects their choices of courses and even their future lives. Some

students wants to be an engineer but somehow chose other courses because, they

think mathematics is hard. Their views on Mathematics limits their potential to be what

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the students' insights on Mathematics and it's
implication towards Senior High School Education and know why there are
struggling on the subject. This study is to be conducted to Senior High School
Students of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) during the
school year 2018-2019 in University of Cebu Lapu-lapu and Mandaue (UCLM). The
basis of this study will be the " Daily Problem Solving Tutorials".

Specific Problem

1. What are the students insights on mathematics as a subject?


2. Why do the students' struggle on Mathematics?
3. Why do most student’s hates Mathematics subject?
4. Based on the findings, what interventions may be proposed?

Theoretical Background

Behaviorism

Behaviorism attempts to explain learning through the observable interactions of the


learner with the environment, without inferring anything that is going on inside the
learner. It is based on the stimulus response model of Skinner, which attempts to apply
the methods of Science to the study of human learning. Learning can be controlled by
affecting the variables of the situation, the behavior, and the consequences of the
behavior (Bell, 1978) Behaviorism was the prevalent theory of learning from the 1950's
through the 1970's give - size to use of empirical, quantitative studies of learning.
Although the behaviorism movement has largely passed from educational research
(some may say proved false) John B.Watson (1990) notes "it's key notions are still alive
and active in the minds of the educators" (p.178).

Theory of Embodied Mathematics

Lackoff and Nuñez (2000) offer a view of learning Mathematics based on the notion "that
conceptual metaphor plays a central, defining role in mathematical ideas within cognitive
unconscious". Their work extends findings in cognitive science to describe how many
mathematical concepts arise in the minds of learners through the use of metaphor and
blending.

Significance of the Study

The conduct of this study is considered beneficial to the following:

Senior High School Principal- Data given will provide the principal the
9information on how Mathematics is being taught on the students, affects their
Academic performance in school. The result will enable the principal to improve
the teachings of Mathematics. Data gathered will help the principal to imitate
collaboration among Math Faculty to help plan the development and advancement
of the Mathematics teaching system in relation to the new curriculum.

Math Teachers- The results of the study will help the teachers evaluate the
quality of education rendered to the Senior High School students. Results would
also develop their professions, such as being creative, thinking another strategies
in enhancing knowledge, skills, and attitude to the students within the given time
frame.

Students- This study will provide information to change the negative thinking of
students regarding Mathematics to increase their knowledge and to develop their
critical thinking skills, problem solving skills, analytical thinking skills and etc which
is very useful for their future job.

University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue- It will help the school to be


known to increase the number of students to study. It makes the school to be
more trusted to a have better and stable job for the students in the future.

Scope and Delimitation

The intent of this study is to know the insights on Mathematics, the struggle on
the student’s on this subjects of University of Cebu Lapu-lapu and Mandaue (UCLM).

The research instruments were only distributed once and no achievement test
were given to the respondents. The achievement in Mathematics of the respondents
based on the third quarter in Mathematics taken during the second semester,
S.Y. 2018-2019.

Only 50 students were used as respondent of the study. They were all Grade 11
students taking up Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics at the University of
Cebu Lapu-lapu and Mandaue (UCLM).

Definition of Terms

SHS-STEM students- is the respondents of the study

SHS-Principal- the given of data will provide the principal what on how Mathematics
help on the students and affects their Academic performance in school

University of Cebu Lapu-lapu and Mandaue- the school where to conduct the study

Mathematics’ Insights- is the subject of the study
