THE 10-POINT SAFETY CHECKLIST

Discover the ten essential elements of effective safety management program.

1. MANAGEMENT COMMITMENT
 Management policy statement is signed by executive manager or CEO
 Program acknowledges management’s responsibility and commitment to safety
 Compliance with local, state, and federal safety requirements or appropriate industry standards
 Commits resources, responsibility and accountability for the safety program

2. RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORKER HEALTH AND SAFETY


 Executive and operating management's responsibility is clearly stated
 Supervisors' responsibility is clearly stated
 Safety coordinator's responsibility is clearly stated
 Employees' responsibility is clearly stated

3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION AND INSPECTION


 Program includes performance of a gap analysis
 Establishes supervisory responsibility
 Requires frequent hazard hunts from a systems-based perspective
 Sets up a corrective action process
 Correction responsibility designated by management

4. INCIDENT LEARNING EVENTS AND INJURY MANAGEMENT


 Formal process in place for reporting and investigation
 Learning teams are established for post-incidents
 Investigation determines the basic causes of the accident
 Corrective action taken / recommended to prevent recurrence is recorded

5. MEETINGS WITH WORKERS


 Supervisor conducts safety meetings with all employees
 Meetings conducted on a recurring basis
 Meetings are documented

6. WRITTEN SAFETY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES


 Safety policies and procedures manual submitted and acceptable (logical, enforceable, and easily
understood)
 Safety policies ACCESSIBLE to each employee, and documented.

7. TRAINING
 New hire safety orientation program in effect for all new employees
 Safety training program in effect for all existing employees, when new jobs involving changes in
processes, procedures, and/or equipment are initiated
 Training performed by supervisor, specialist, consultant, or vendor

8. RECORDKEEPING
 Accident investigation reports
 Safety meeting reports
 Inspection reports
 Training records
 Osha 300 logs

9. FIRST AID
 Trained first aid personnel at each job site on each shift
 Adequate first aid kits readily available on site
 Emergency phone numbers for medical services and company personnel posted and maintained

10. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS


 Written Emergency Preparedness Plan covering all recognized contingencies
 Plan complies with all federal, state, and local laws
 Emergency numbers posted
 Evacuation plans and assembly areas identified
 Emergency shutdown and startup procedures developed and implemented (if applicable)
 Employees and contractors / subcontractors trained in plan
 Annual training drills
 Emergency plan updated annually, and training on revised plan conducted
