PART B (14 mark)
21. A 30 cm diameter pipe, conveying water, branches into two pipes of
diameters 20 cm and 15 cm respectively. If the average velocity in the
30 cm diameter pipe is 2.5 m/sec. Find the discharge in this pipe. Also
determine the velocity in 1 5 cm pipe if the average velocity in 20 cm
diameter pipe is 2 m/sec.
22. Calculate the dynamic viscosity of an oil, which is used for lubrication
between as square plate of size 0.8m×0.8m and an inclined plane with
angle of inclination 30° as shown in fig. The weight of the square plate
is 300N and it slides down the inclined plane with a uniform velocity
of 0.3m/s. The thickness of oil film is 1.5mm.
23. (i) State Buckingham’s π theorem.
(ii) The efficiency η of a fan depends on density ρ, dynamic viscosity
μ of the fluid, angular velocity ω, diameter D of the rotor and the
discharge Q. Express η in π terms
24 Derive on the basis of dimensional analysis suitable parameters to
present the thrust developed by a propeller. Assume that the thrust P
depends upon the angular velocity ω, speed of advance V, diameter D
, dynamic viscosity µ, density Ƿ, elasticity of the fluid medium which
can be denoted by the speed of sound in the medium C.
25 Two large plane surfaces are 2.4cm apart. The space between the
surfaces is filled with glycerine of viscosity 0.8Ns/m2.What force is
required to drag a thin plate of surface area 0.5m2 between the two
large plane surfaces at a speed of 0.6m/s.
If (i) the thin plate is in the middle of two plane surfaces
(ii) the thin plate is at a distance of 0.8cm from one plane surfaces.
26 Derive Bernoulli’s Equation from Euler’s Equation of motion for
Dynamic fluid flow.
27 The pressure difference Δp in a pipe of diameter D and length l due to
turbulent flow depends on velocity V, viscosity μ, density ρ and
roughness k. Using Buckingham’s theorem, obtain expression for Δp
