LABORATORY NURSERY SCHOOL

(A Project of the Department of Home Science)

WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAI 600 006
(Learning Centre for Child Development)

The WCC Nursery School was started in 1971 by the Department of Home Science.
The primary purpose of establishing this learning centre was to use it as a laboratory for the
undergraduate students who are majoring in Nutrition, Food Service Management and
Dietetics. While fulfilling the above purpose it also meets the growth and developmental
needs of 2 ½ to 3 ½ year old children by offering them experiences adapted to their growth
needs at these age levels. Thus it shares with the parents the responsibility of promoting
sound growth, in a period when growth is rapid and important.

There is no formal teaching of the 3 R’s. (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic). Play activities
constitute the most important means by which children exercise their growing abilities, try
out their developing powers and venture into new experiences.
