Recalls rise: food is fatal to 3000

people
Americans experience more food recalls today than they did five years ago, particularly when it
comes to meat and poultry, a government watchdog analysis found. Meat and poultry recalls
where increased by two-thirds from 2013 until 2018, while food recalls overall edged up 10
percent, according to the report published Thursday by the U.S. Public Interest Research
Group. The group says the numbers prove more could be done to protect the public against
such as E.coli and salmonella. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates
48 million people get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die from foodborne disease each
year in the USA.

Fruit Juices, for Kids and Adults, May

Many kids drink alot of juice and we may think its not harming the kids body but it is . it contain
potentially harmful levels of arsenic, cadmium and lead, according to Consumer Reports. The
non-profit consumer research and advocacy group tested 45 fruit juices (apple, grape, pear and
fruit blends) sold across the U. S. and found elevated levels of those heavy metals in nearly half
of them. Particularly concerning to the researchers was that many of the juices were marketed
to children. Consumer Reports tested 45 drinks and found 21 contained enough of a single
heavy metal or a combination of the metals to concern experts who worked with Consumer and
highlights the safety concerns over elevated levels of metals found in fruit juices.

Salmonella Sneaks Its Way Into Dry

Foods
According to the passage for about years, salmonella scares have centered on raw or
undercooked foods such as chicken, eggs or meat and some poeple knew of that already . But
during one summer, there's a concern the bacteria may have found its way into the kind of
packaged products where one would never expect it - Pepperidge Farm Goldfish, Ritz Crackers
and Kellogg's Honey Smacks. It turns out the potentially fatal pathogen is sneaky, able to
survive not only wet but dry environments. In this case, whey powder, an ingredient often used
in shelf-stable dry foods, may be tainted with salmonella how salmonella is getting into dry
foods through whey powder

Behind the Organic Label

According to the story As organic products and their claims to superiority have grown more
common, scientists, policy analysts and some consumers have begun to ask for proof. Where's
the evidence, they ask, for the widespread belief that organic foods are safer and more
nutritious than those raised by conventional farming methods?" This article examines the claims
behind organic labels and reveals that, according to some food safety and nutrition scientists,
such proof does not exist. Indeed, by one well-established measure of healthfulness--
contamination with fecal matter and potentially harmful bacteria some organic foods may pose
greater risks to consumers

Chicken Isn't the Only Food That Poses

a Salmonella Threat
For years, Americans have been told that they need to eat more fruits and vegetables, and
there is some evidence that they are heeding that advice. Those who are consuming more fruits
and vegetables frequently eat the produce raw to take full advantage of the food's nutritional
qualities. But when fruits or vegetables are contaminated with salmonella, eaters can become
infected when chomping down on fresh produce, said Francisco Diez-Gonzalez, professor and
director of the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia. Washing the produce won't
help, either. Only cooking it will destroy the salmonella: The bacteria are killed within seconds at
temperatures above 160 degrees Fahrenheit. How does produce get contaminated with
salmonella question people may ask ? It can happen in any number of ways, says Diez-
Gonzalez. Farmers may be using contaminated water on their crops, or they may be using
manure infected with bacteria. But the produce could also be poorly handled further down the
supply chain. Vegetables, for example, could get contaminated if they're chopped on an
unwashed cutting board previously used to, say, debone a chicken.

When Food Goes Wrong

The rate of salmonella poisoning has jumped 60 per cent in the past decade, according to the
national surveillance system for notifiable diseases. The rise is largely attributed to a shift in
preference towards chicken meat, contamination by raw or undercooked chicken becoming a
major cause. However, Australian National University senior epidemiology lecturer Martyn Kirk
warns that any foods prepared without the bacterial "kill step" of cooking increase the risk of
bacteria spreading. "It's definitely not always the chicken," he said. "We've had outbreaks of
salmonella linked to rockmelon, papaya, cucumbers." Raw or minimally cooked eggs are .

Why Our Food-Inspection System Is

Failing

They are failing because A new outbreak of food-borne illness from salmonella-contaminated
peanuts produced in the U.S. is killing Americans and might be making Canadians sick. The
U.S. producer of the poison peanuts has something in common with the Canadian company
whose contaminated cold cuts killed 20 people this summer [2008]: Neither was required to
report to food-safety inspectors when a test showed contamination in their plants and product
enforcement of Canadian safety regulations" as well as their "decision to kill reports the
government once published that made detailed information about safety and sanitation practices
at Canadian meat plants available to Canadian consumers."

'If They're Not Eating any Vegetables,

You Panic'
You need vegetables in your body , why because its healthy for you For many parents, the idea
of raising children on nothing but plants is hard to fathom. Anyone who has ever struggled to
make a child eat something as inoffensive as peas will probably balk at barring fish fingers
(protein) and yoghurt (calcium). But the number of vegan children is on the rise in the UK. No
one knows exactly how many there are; the Vegan Society's most recent figures state that there
are about 600,000 vegans in the country, twice the number there were two years ago – but this
figure accounts only for people aged over 15. It's a social shift driven by health, environmental
and animal welfare concerns, as well as high-profile campaigns such as Veganuary, which saw
nearly 168,500 people around the world give up meat, fish, eggs, dairy and honey for four
weeks last January This article highlights why parents are switching their children to a
vegetarian diet.

You Are What They Eat

Parks 5

People are at the top of the food chain. As a result, we're vulnerable to pathogens, drugs, and
contaminants consumed by the animals we eat. And we eat a lot: an average of 137 pounds of
beef, chicken, fish, and shellfish per American in 2002, the latest year for which figures are
available. This article reviews the benefits and risks to humans from the foods that animals eat
and discusses ways consumers can improve food safety.we a lot of unhealthy things then we
have people who eat healthy food . The term you are what you eat is like saying you eat some
fruits and a salad . After that you feel good and have energy and someone may say you are
what you eat .
