The project entitled “Construction and maintenance of bridges along national roads
(replacement of permanent weak bridges) Princesa bridge (B02425 LZ)”, consisting of 2 lanes,
located along the Lucena-Tayabas-Lucban-Sampaloc-Mauban port road, the bridge having a
length of 41 meters and the total project having a length of 379 meters. The bridge has a starting
elevation of 134+614.45 and ends at 134+655.45. At least two of the remaining, Spanish-era
bridges in Tayabas, Quezon province, are in danger of being altered or altogether destroyed
because of a road-widening project by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The project will construct a new girder type bridge which will replace the old Princesa
bridge. This will widen modern bridges to over two lanes, affecting Puente de Gibanga and
Puente de Princesa, two of 12 surviving 19th- century bridges in Tayabas. These bridges were
collectively declared National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum in 2011.In the 2011
declaration, National Museum describe the Tayabas bridges as “testaments to ingenious
engineering and construction styles which pave the way for development [of several towns],
ideally without harmful consequences to the natural environment.”
Indicated in the contract is the completion date of the project which will be finished by
October 12, 2018, but due to a petition about the old Princesa bridge being one of the 12 bridges
that survived in the World War II, causing the completion date of the contract to become
uncertain and 2 of the lanes left unfinished. For this reason the completion of this project is not
definite.
The bridge was built due to the surveys executed indicating of heavy traffic experienced
in the parts of where the old bridge was erected, as a solution, the development of a new bridge
to lessen heavy traffic in the area was implemented this was the primary reason for the
construction of the bridge and to further economic development in the said areas.
