∙ 5-ESS2-1. Develop a model using an example to describe the ways the atmosphere and biosphere
interact.
∙ 5-ESS3-1. Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to
study the effects of climate change.

ISTE Standards
∙ 1b. Build networks and customize their learning environments in the ways to support the learning
process.
∙ 3d. Build Knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and
theories and pursuing answers and solutions.
Essential Question: How does climate affect humans, planets, and our solar system?
I. Key Question #1: How do the climates of other planets compare to Earth's climate?
A. Planet climate characteristics
a. Students will use ThingLink to describe a planet's climate characteristics
B. Distance from the sun
a. Students will host a podcast video describing how distance from the sun affects climate
change
C. Earth's orbit
a. Students will create a Twitter account called "Earth's Orbit" and tweet as if you are the
Earth orbiting around the sun

II. Key Question #2: How does the Earth's climate impact our everyday lives?
A. Layers of the atmosphere
a. Students will create a Thinglink describing the different layers of the Earth's atmosphere
and how climate change affects the atmospheric layers
B. Ozone layer
a. Students will create a YouTube video describing ways to limit the effect of climate
change on the ozone layer
C. Greenhouse effect
a. Students will use StoryBird to create a story describing how the Greenhouse effect
impacts everyday lives

III. Key Question #3: How are natural disasters an effect of climate change?
A. Flooding
a. Students will watch a video on Flooding and answer questions using Google Forms.
B. Forest Fires
a. After reading several articles, students will create a presentation about Forest Fires and
how they affect climate change using Google Slides, Prezi, or PowerPoint.
C. Tropical Storms
a. Students will use NearPod to learn about hurricanes and tropical storms, how they have an
effect on climate change, and describe what changes have occurred over time by
answering interactive questions.
Follow Up Activities
A. Homework:
∙ Flipgrid: What can you do to help to slow down the effects of climate change?
B. Summative Assessment:
∙ Create your Perfect Climate using Pinterest
C. Formative Assessment:
∙ Quizizz: The Effects of Climate Change
