INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH – HOW TO LEARN THE SKILLS

The recommended assessment strategies are based on the approach used by the
cardiovascular clinicians and nurses successfully using this technology. The following
outlines the key steps to take that will result in a quality cardiovascular assessment:
1. Perform the assessment using an orderly approach
Note: Traditional teaching of the physical assessment includes:
(1) Inspection, (2) Palpation, (3) Percussion and (4) Auscultation.
Percussion of the heart is no longer considered to have value.
Percussion of the lungs does have value, but is not simulated in Harvey.
Most important, the emphasis in this manual is on auscultation.
2. Memorize the pressure/volume curves
3. Get involved through mimicry
4. Practice on Harvey and your patients
5. Evaluate your skills on Harvey and your patients.
