Language 1: Adverbs
Adverbs describe verbs. They say how.
verb + adverb
Eg. She walks slowly.
You can make adverbs from some adjectives. Eg. slow (adjective) – slowly (adverb)

We talk quietly when we come home because my sister is usually asleep.


I need to do this quickly – I only have five minutes.
People don’t usually talk loudly when the movie starts.
She plays the piano badly – it sounds terrible!
Robert drives his car carefully. He doesn’t go too fast.

Language 2: can / can’t, has / have to for rules
Talk about rules with can, can’t and have to.
Eg. In a library (quiet: no loud noise): You have to speak quietly. You can’t speak loudly.

Use can to say there is no rule. You have a choice.


A concert:
subject +can + base verb
Eg. You can dance to the music.
bring food and drink inside.

Use can’t to say there is a rule. Don’t do this!


A sports match:
subject +can + base verb
Eg. You can’t run on the field.
sell your ticket.

Use has / have to to say there is a rule. Don’t do this!


A movie:
subject +has / have to + base verb
Eg. You have to stay in your seat.
turn off your mobile.

Vocabulary: at the weekend


I go out with my friends. We go shopping or to a café.
I stay in and I watch TV at home.
We go for a drink at a bar or a pub.
I sleep in at the weekends. I get up at about 11am!

Language: punctuation
Capital letters
• Use at the start of a sentence. Eg. My weekends …
• For names. Eg. people (James), places (India), days / months (Friday, March), etc.
Full stops
• Use these at the end of a sentence. Eg. Then I usually go home.
Commas
• Use a comma after each thing in a list, but not the last one. Eg. We check out a new movie,
restaurant or café. (Not: We check out a new movie, restaurant, or café.)
• For two different ideas in a sentence. Eg. Sometimes I run on Sunday, but I don’t usually have time.
Contractions
• Use these to join words (like be and have) together in informal writing.
Eg. We are learning English. > We’re learning English.
Jack has got an interesting job. > Jack’s got an interesting job.
Question marks
• Put these at the end of a question. Eg. Where do you live?
Exclamation marks
• Put these at the end of a sentence for things that are funny or unusual. Use them in informal
writing. Eg. writing to a friend.
Eg. I hate computers! I take my computer to my brother when I have a problem. He fixes it for free!

A Put punctuation in the short paragraphs. Add capital letters, full stops, commas, question marks and
exclamation marks. / = start a new sentence.

C Work in groups. Take a piece of paper. Write another short paragraph. Use capital letters, full stops,
commas, a question mark and an exclamation mark. Then check your paragraph with your teacher.

E Pass your paper to another group. Look at the paragraph with no punctuation another group gives
you. Add the punctuation. When you finish, turn over and check your answers.

Language reference

Vocabulary 1: booking tickets

The show starts with quiet music. Everyone is ready.


The show finishes when everyone leaves the theatre.
The game starts at 3.00pm when the teams come out.
The game finishes at 4.30. Then we all go home by train.

Language 1: present simple (timetables)


Use the present simple to talk about a fixed time (it doesn’t change). It’s regular (every evening):
Eg. The train leaves at 6.30 in the evening.
You can find this information in timetables for buses, trains, university lectures etc. or in programmes
(movies, what’s on TV etc.). Eg. The car programme is on channel 7 on Mondays.
Examples:
Matches start at 2.30 on Saturday afternoons.
What time does the first show begin? At six o’clock.
The bus doesn’t stop here at weekends.
When does the movie end? It finishes at 8pm.

Use the present perfect to talk about experiences in your life. You don’t say when.
Eg. I’ve climbed a mountain.

In this sentence (present perfect) the important thing is the experience:


I’ve lived in Malaysia. (At some time … we don’t know exactly when.)
For saying when (time, date etc.) use the past simple:
