Economics Syllabus
Spring 2019

Welcome to Economics!
My name is Ms. Rygh, and I will be teaching you during this spring semester. I am a
student teacher from California State Long Beach. During this semester, I will be working closely
with Ms. Eulo and the rest of the McBride faculty to provide you with an introduction to
economic fundamentals. I will be the lead teacher and Ms. Eulo will be observing and
participating in classroom activities. This class can vary day to day depending on a number of
factors. In this course you can expect to analyze economic concepts by studying and
interpreting graphs, tables, charts, and percentages. Our class time will include a variety of
independent and group work consisting of readings, discussions, videos, lectures, written work,
research, tests, quizzes, and projects.

Methodology / Why
Economics is a social science that focuses on the choices people make about the
utilization of resources and the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and
services. My objectives for this course are for you to master fundamental economic concepts,
appreciate how those concepts are related, understand how you are affected by our economic
system, become productive decisions makers, and informed contributors to our society.
In this course we will be investigating questions such as: How is economics about
scarcity, investment, growth, employment, competition, protection, entrepreneurship, and
markets? How does the economy relate to me? What does it mean to budget? How do
markets work in the abstract and concrete world? What does it mean to be financially literate?
How do worldwide markets affect me? To achieve all of this, students learn to apply basic
economic principles and methods of analysis, building on the knowledge of economics gained in
earlier grade levels. Throughout this course you will learn to make reasoned decisions on
economic issues as citizens, workers, consumers, business owners, and members of civic
groups.
Units of Study
Unit 1: Fundamental Economic Concepts and Reasoning
Unit 2: American Market Economy and Governmental Influence
Unit 3: Labor Markets
Unit 4: Aggregate Economic Behavior and Macro Econ
Unit 5: Our Global Economy

Classroom Goals and Expectations:
I expect my class and the individuals in them to be responsible, respectful, and scholarly
at all times. I will not accept inappropriate behavior or discriminatory remarks directed towards
any other students or staff at McBride High School. Students are expected to follow the
schoolwide rules at all times while on McBride’s campus. This includes common areas,
walkways, and every class. When students are found to be in violation of these policies, they
will be dealt with on an individual basis. Parents/guardians may become notified depending on
the severity of misconduct. There are three simple rules for conduct in my class:
1. Take responsibility for learning: work hard; do your best; listen; be on time; bring
material to class.
2. Respect the rights of others: don’t disrupt others; show courtesy; cooperate; no
touching or unwanted comments; use appropriate language.
3. Treat all school and personal property with respect: borrow property only with
permission; don’t write in or on things; no graffiti.
**consequences can vary depending on the infraction but will traditionally be on or more of the
following: one-on-one discussion after class, point deduction, detention, parent contact, or
referral to administrator.
Grading
Your grade is based on the total number or points you earn. I do not give grades, rather
students earn them. I use a standard grading scale:
A= 100-90% of the total possible points
B= 89-80% of the total possible points
C= 79-70% of the total possible points
D= 69-60% of the total possible points
F= anything below 60%

Cell phones, iPods, Earbuds, etc.

According to California Education Code 51512, law prohibits the use of any electronic listening
or recording device use by pupils, without prior consent of the teacher. In other words, it is
against the law to record any other pupil or teacher on school grounds. Smart phones (and
iPods, earbuds, etc.) are a valuable research tools and from time to time you will be allowed to
use them in that capacity, otherwise, they must be silenced and put away.

Attendance/Tardies
Regular class attendance is strongly recommended since a majority of the course will involve
group discussions and activities that will aid in an understanding of material to help students
with the unit exams. Students will be considered tardy if they are not in their seats silently, and
ready to work when the bell rings for class to begin. After the third tardy, Ms. Rygh will inform
the student’s parents/guardians to communicate this issue and the significance of attending
class as well as getting to class on time. After the third tardy, consequences could include
detentions, parent—teacher—student conference to discuss the issue.

Classroom Participation
Studies have consistently shown that students who participate in class discussions and activities
are more likely to grasp learning objectives. Class participation, or lack thereof, will make a
difference in one’s grade.
Turning in Assignments:
When students complete an assignment digitally, it will be uploaded to SchoolLoop or Google
Classroom. If students are turning in a hardcopy, assignments will be turned in at the beginning
of the period via their row or at the end of the period. Assignments will be graded for students
to see within two weeks of being turned in. Grades will be updated online to school loop for
both physical and electronic assignments. Physical copies will be returned to students with a
grade or completion check.
No late work will be accepted. Homework/classwork assigned must be turned in on or before
the due date.
Sloppy, cluttered, or inappropriately formatted assignments will not be accepted. Students are
expected to complete all assignments and examinations on time. Although students are
expected to see the instructor/SchoolLoop about missed work, a “study buddy” is encouraged.
Being absent the day before a project or exam does not excuse a student from taking that exam
except in unusual circumstances. As a result, it is imperative that students see the instructor
before the exam is given to discuss options.
*for late work due to illness/excused absence, see make-up policy.
Make-up Policy
If a student is absent with an “excused” absence, the student has one day for each day of
absence to make-up the work. After this time, the work is considered late and will not be
accepted. No make-up work/credit is allowed for truancies.
Communication
The best way to communicate with Ms. Rygh is via email, ARygh.McBrideLB@gmail.com.
Students and parents may receive emails about major due dates and assignment details.
Schoolloop and Google Classroom are used for maintaining daily assignments and due dates
schedules.
