1 SCOPE
This method statement describes the step by step procedure for placing the flexible PVC waterstop,
Sika®-Waterbars, in construction and movement joint.
2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Sika®-Waterbars as flexible PVC waterstops used to seal construction and expansion joints in concrete
structures. Sika®-Waterbars are available in different sizes and types, depending on their use.

4.3 APPLICATION
The selection of a suitable waterbar is governed by the type of joint, concrete thickness, grade of
concrete, reinforcement position, expected movement (expansion/shear) as well as waterhead to
which it is to be exposed to.
Generally the overall width of the waterbar should be equal to the thickness of the concrete slab
into which it is placed.
For optimum results, centrally placed waterbars are preferred.
INTERNAL WATERBARS:
Sika-Waterbars “O” Profile & Sika-Waterbars “V” Profile
Pre-punched eyelets are located in the outer flanges of the profiles.
Fix the Waterbars to the reinforcement with tie wires to ensure the waterbars
are not displaced during concreting.
EXTERNAL WATERBARS:
Sika- Waterbars “AR” Profile & Sika-Waterbars “DR” Profile
Place the Waterbar on the external side of the concrete wall or floor by attaching
it temporarily to the formwork during concrete placement.
The proturding ribs become cast into the concrete to provide an excellent
watertight seal while at the same time securely anchoring waterbars to the structure.
Notes: When working with waterbars with a central bulb (“DR” profile & “O” profile) (either internally or
externally placed), it is important that the centre bulb should not be cast into the concrete but remains
exposed (free).

4.4 PLACING OF CONCRETE
FIRST STAGE:
The Waterbar performs its function only if both sides are well embedded in the concrete.
Avoid formation of honeycombs by vibrating carefully around the Waterbar, particularly when using
horizontal Waterbars.
The consistency of the concrete itself should be neither too plastic nor too stiff, and the aggregates
must be well graded.
Placing of fresh concrete near the Sika® -Waterbar requires care, as otherwise it will be forced from
its position by the pressure of the fresh concrete, i.e. the ends will fold up.
To prevent this, the same concrete pressure must be present on both sides of the Waterbar.
Removal of formwork in the neighbourhood of Sika® -Waterbar must be done with care.
SECOND STAGE:
The ends of the Waterbar should be thoroughly checked for honeycombing at the stop-end, and if
necessary the concrete should be repaired with Sika® Monotop® or SikaGrout® .
The Waterbar should also be cleaned of all hardened concrete remnants adhering from the first
concrete stage.
The ‘loose’ ends of the Waterbar must be firmly fixed to the reinforcing steel in its final position prior
to casting the adjacent concrete as in the first stage procedure.
4.5 WELDING
Sika® -Waterbars are made from thermoplastic PVC and can therefore be welded easily.
The ends are heated to approximately 200°C with a suitable welding blade, until an even, molten
bead of PVC appears.
The welding blade is then removed and the molten ends pressed together firmly.
However, it is recommended to use factory fabricated junctions such as T, L, X and Corner pieces.
The welded joint should be inspected once it has cooled.
Dirt may accumulate on blade including charred remains of PVC. Clean PVC from blade while it is still
hot.
