Apparel Production Planning & Control (Assignment 1)

1) Do you agree with Amitosh about shift timings?

No, I don’t agree with Amitosh about shift timings as overtime was not the main issue as
Rajat said. Also there may be some problems in taking permissions from factory head to
work after 12pm. Also efficiency may be decreased in late night shift as workers may feel
sleepy.

2) Do you agree with Salil?

Yes, I agree with Salil to install new lines and hire new workers because there will a huge
increase in demand due to end of Multi Fibre Arrangement in the year 2004 and the trade in
textile and clothing was to be free governed by the rules of the World Trade Organisation
(WTO). So as a long term plan to meet that future demand there must be need of new lines
and more workers. Although there is a huge initial investment but still it will be profitable in
future.

3) What would you do if you are Rajat?

I would not take quick decisions as Amitosh said that one week is not enough time for
experimentation on running second shift. So, I would give him some more time to get better
results probably two weeks.

At the same time I would ask Salil to prepare a report containing costs associated
with installing new lines and also hiring new workers (as there must be some training
costs with new workers) with respect to the production improvement and reduction in
lead time. And also by how much time we can cover these costs.

Then I will take decision after given time comparing both cases on the
basis of costs and improvements in production and reduction in lead time.

However Amitosh’s idea will be preffered even if it has a little less

production and a little more lead time as compared to Salil’s idea as there is
negligible cost in running second shift.

Still Salil’s idea could be worked out or may be in future when company has
good economic condition as long term plan as mentioned above.
