Chapter 9 Short Essay Questions: The Classroom as Community

EDU221

Name: Jonah Cude

1. What is the difference between Classroom Management and

Classroom Community?
Classroom mangagement tends to be considered more hierarchial than
classroom community. It often involves a teacher setting the rules
only and the students are to rigidly adhere to them. Classroom
community involves more of a “flat” approach to the classroom. The
teacher and the students are more on the same team and the aim is to
create a mutually respectful and constructive environment with trust
and compassion. (Koch, pp. 147)

2. After reading chapter 9 in the Koch textbook and these articles:

community-any-classroom-maurice-elias write about what you will
do to establish classroom community.
I think I will base my conduct in respect for the students. It’s hard to feel
like there’s a good classroom atmosphere when the teacher acts like they are
far above and disconnected from the students. I believe there’s great
importance in having a somewhat personal classroom relationship with each
student (if the class size allows it). Small things like engaging individual
students in casual conversation or asking about weekends can really make
students feel valued by the teacher. My goal will be to create a community
that the students will want to benefit, rather than being required to.
