Medicinal plants have a promising future because there are about half million plants around the world,

and most of them their

medical activities have not investigate yet, and their medical activities could be decisive in the treatment of present or future studies.

Therefore it is a very important point for the open access journals to encourage researchers and clinicians to work hard in order to
clarify the main active ingredients which can be extracted from medicinal plants. Moreover, to clarify their role in the treatment of
present diseases, and how they can be used to produce or synthesis more effective drugs.

Medicinal plants frequently used as raw materials for extraction of active ingredients which used in the synthesis of different drugs.
Like in case of laxatives, blood thinners, antibiotics and antimalaria medications, contain ingredients from plants. Moreover the
active ingredients of Taxol, vincristine, and morphine isolated from foxglove, periwinkle, yew, and opium poppy, respectively.

Plants are the essential foundation of medicine.

Safety of some herbal ingredients has been recently called into question, in part because of the
identification of adverse events associated with their use and, increasingly, because of the
demonstration of clinically relevant interactions between herbs and prescription drugs.

For herbal products in common use, evidence of efficacy may be based upon traditional use,
testimonials, clinical studies, both controlled and uncontrolled, and randomized, double-blind, placebo-
controlled trials. For the most part, however, there is a lack of systematic clinical studies to support
claims. Safety of some herbal ingredients has been recently called into question, in part because of the
identification of adverse events associated with their use and, increasingly, because of the
demonstration of clinically relevant interactions between herbs and prescription drugs. Adverse events
(stroke, heart attacks, heart-rate irregularities, liver toxicity, seizures, psychoses and death) associated
with use of ephedra for weight loss, body-building effects and increased energy or kava-kava (also
known as kawa), widely used in Europe and increasingly in Canada to treat anxiety, nervousness,
insomnia, pain and muscle tension, for example, have caused some countries to issue regulations
restricting or banning these products (e.g. Health Canada Online, 2002a,b). Only a few herbs in common
use have been suspected of causing cancer. These include Aristolochia, Rubia tinctorum, Morinda
officinalis and Senecio riddellii, as discussed in detail below.
The History of Medicinal Plants:

Medicinal plants are a source for a wide variety of natural antioxidants and are used for the treatment
of diseases throughout the world. Some of these properties are antimicrobial, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic,
anti-atherosclerosis , immunomodulatory , and even reno-protection or hepatoprotective effects
(Mahmoud, 2012).
