Explanation of the Anatomy
a) Citations

Citation is a reference to the place where the case has been published.

b) Caption

Caption includes the names of the parties in the case. The first party is the plaintiff and the
second is the defendant and the position will reverse in an appeal case.

c) Catchwords

Catchwords usually can be found in italic text as the keyword which the publisher has
identified in a particular case law.

d) Headnote

Headnote is a brief summary of a particular point of law that is added to the text of a court
decision to aid readers in locating discussion of a legal issue.

e) Court

A court is an institution with authority to adjudicate legal disputes between parties and carry
out the administration of justice in civil, criminal and administrative matters in accordance to
the rule of law. The name of a court is law report is used as reference for future cases and it
will indicate the case whether it is an appeal case or otherwise.

f) Judges

A judge is a person who will preside over court proceedings, either alone or a part of a panel
of judges.

g) Date of hearing

Date of hearing is to indicate when the proceeding before a court is made. Testimony and
evidences may also be brought during this session to supplement legal arguments.
h) Date of judgement

Date of judgment is the date of rendition of the judgment which is the day when the judgment
is signed by the judge and filed with the clerk of court.

i) Procedural History

This is the disposition of the case in the lower court(s) that explains how the case got to the
court whose opinion you are reading.

j) Judgment/Opinion

A judgment is a decision of a court regarding the rights and liabilities of parties in a legal
action or proceeding. Judgments also generally provide the court’s explanation of why it has
chosen to make a particular court order.

k) Case referred to

This refers to the cases that is included in the particular case as reference.

l) Legislation referred to

This refers to the law which has been enacted by a legislature and is referred to the particular
case.

m) Notes

This refers to the proper citation of the references to be referred that the court had relied on in
coming of its decision

n) Counsels

A counsel or a counsellor at law is a person who gives advice and deals with various issues,
particularly in legal matters. It is a title often used interchangeably with the title of lawyer.
