Instructions: This paper consists of FIVE (5) questions. Answer any FOUR (4) questions in the
answer booklet provided. All questions carry equal marks.
Question 1
(a) An electronic company produces a storage console. It is important to control the time x
in seconds that the console takes for its lower storage component door to open
completely. Thus, a sample of five consoles is selected randomly twice a day from the
production line. Table Q.1(a) below lists ten sample average opening times xi and the
corresponding sample ranges of opening times Ri for the consoles in a 5-day-week.
(i) Display the X – Chart and the R – Chart for the above data.
[Note: You may assume the following formulas, namely
(I) UCL = x A2 R , CL = x , LCL = x A2 R for X – Chart;
(II) UCL = D3 R , CL = R , LCL = D4 R for R – Chart.]

Question 2
(a) A student who considered herself to be a “car gal” was interested in how the horsepower
X (in horsepower) and the weight Y (in pounds) of a car affected the time taken Z (in
seconds) for the car to go from 0 to 60 mph (miles per hour). Table Q.2(a) below gives,
for each of 14 cars, the values of X , Y and Z :

(c) A store selling newspapers orders only n copies of the newspaper Varsity Today because
the manager does not get many calls for that publication. Suppose that the number of
request for Varsity Today per day, X follows a Poisson distribution with mean 3.
(i) What is the expected number of Varsity Today sold per day?
(1 mark)
(ii) By means of the Poisson distribution table (with various choices of ) in the
provided Formula Booklet 1 provided, determine the minimum number of n so
that the chance of running out of Varsity Today is less than 0.05.

Question 4
(a) Suppose that z x iy is a complex number, and that v(x,y) x 3 y xy 3 is a real scalar
function.
(b) Apply Euler’s method, in three steps, to obtain the numerical solution at x = 3.00, of the
following initial value problem.

(c) Based on a survey conducted in 2006, there were 50% of Americans having at least one
credit card.
Let X be the number of people having at least one credit card in a random sample of 30
Americans.
Let A be the event of exactly 19 Americans in the random sample having at least one
credit card.

Question 5
(a) We are to build a 1000-m3 oil container of cylinder-shaped with a lid, see Figure Q.5(a)
below. The costs of the materials used to build the base, the cylindrical body and the lid
of the oil container are RM30/m2, RM30/m2 and RM20/m2 respectively.
Figure Q.5(a)
Use the method of Lagrange multipliers to obtain the dimensions of the oil container so
that the cost of the total materials used to build the oil can is a minimum.

(b) The TIV Telephone Company provides long-distance telephone services in an area.
According to the company’s records, the average length of all long-distance calls placed
through this company in 2004 was 12.44 minutes. The company’s management wanted to
check if the mean length of the current long-distance calls is different from 12.44
minutes. A sample of 150 such calls placed through this company produced a mean
length x of 13.71 minutes. The standard deviation of all such calls is 2.65 minutes.
Use 2% level of significance to conclude whether the mean length of all current long-
distance calls is different from 12.44 minutes.
