3.2.2. Complex Sentences

A complex sentence contains one independent clause and one (or more) dependent
clause. In a complex sentence, one idea is generally more important than the other one. The
more important idea is placed in the independent clause, and the less important idea in the
dependent clause.

 Noun clause
A noun clause (or nominal clause) is a dependent clause that functions as a noun or noun
phrase. It can be a subject, object, complement or in apposition to a noun.

Noun clauses are subdivided into 3 kinds: That-clauses, Wh-question clauses, and
Yes/No question clause.

Example 10: In the sentence: “In fact, it may be due to the very precision of their
presentation that they are removed even further from empirical reality.” Đây là relative clause

There are one independent clause and one dependent clause in this sentence.

are removed even further from empirical reality

b. That-clause: that they are removed even further from empirical reality

mà các nhân vật này càng khác xa hơn những diễn viên thực.”

Example 11: In the sentence: “If according to the analysis of ‘television as ideology’
film accommodates various layers of behavioural response patterns, this would imply that the
ideology provided by the industry, its officially intended models, may by no means
automatically correspond to those that affect the spectators.”

clause, in this sentence.

a. The independent clause: this would imply that the ideology provided by the industry, its
officially intended models, may by no means automatically correspond to those that affect the
spectators

b. If clause: If according to the analysis of ‘television as ideology’ film accommodates various

layers of behavioural response patterns

c. That-clause 1: that the ideology provided by the industry, its officially intended models, may
by no means automatically correspond to those

d. That-clause 2: that affect the spectators

Suggested translation: “Nếu theo phân tích rằng 'ti vi như là công cụ của hệ tư tưởng',
các phim sẽ thích nghi với các lớp đối tượng khác nhau với các khuôn mẫu đối đáp ứng xử,
điều này có nghĩa là hệ tư tưởng do ngành làm phim đưa ra, các mẫu hình dự định chính
thống, có thể chẳng có gì là giống hoàn toàn với những gì mà người xem chứng kiến.”

 Relative clause
A relative clause is a subordinate clause that modifies a noun phrase, most commonly a
noun.

There are two types of relative clause:

- Defining Relative Clauses: Defining relative clauses (also called identifying relative
clauses or restrictive relative clauses) give detailed information defining a general term or
expression. Defining relative clauses are not put in commas.

- Non-Defining Relative Clauses : Non-defining relative clauses (also called non-

identifying relative clauses or non-restrictive relative clauses) give additional information on
something, but do not define it. Non-defining relative clauses are put in commas.

Example 12: “This may be to some extent the fault of the novel which incorporates a
type of rationalistic casuistry into the internal movement of its text under the guise of a
psychology that the more progressive Freudian psychology of the period exposed as a
rationalization”

c. The second relative-clause: that the more progressive Freudian psychology of the period
exposed as a rationalization. In this clause, that represent to the noun psychology of the
previous clause.

đã kết hợp các phán quyết đúng sai theo hướng duy lý vào sự biến động bên trong nội dung
với bề ngoài theo lý luận tâm lý học, cho rằng tâm lý học hiện đại của Freud trong thời kỳ bấy
giờ sẽ tạo ra sự hợp lý hóa hơn
