Old ideas, new thoughts

In today’s society, people tend to stereotype some things. Stereotypes can be very harmful and
unfair. Gender stereotypes have been around since society started and it continues being as
strong as before and even more. Why do people tend to stereotype things?

As a child, I grew up in a society with the idea that boys are very powerful and that they
“dominate” the world. In comparison, girls are weaker and they do or have to do what men say. I
was told by my family that there are sports and toys are for boys and others for girls. They can be
simply distinguished by the colour or if it is a car or a doll. A doctor called Zimmermann said that:
“children should be free to play with the toys they enjoy”.

When I became an adolescent, I started to develop my own ideas about gender stereotypes. I told
my family that the society is wrong, but in order to change, adults will have to explain children
certain things, which are incorrect. For example, if girls want to play with a car, we do not have to
tell them that cars are only for boys.

Nowadays, society is changing. According to Doctor Zimmermann, it is taking place in this world.
Old people have changed a lot. They have understood that their old ideas were harmful for the
new generations, who are starting to develop their own ideas. They are posting videos on the
social networks so that people realize the changes and the gender stereotype is being left behind.

Boys and girls have started using toys of many different types. That is to say, boys have started
playing with dolls and girls with cars. This is an important advance for the whole world.

In the past, there were a lot of gender stereotypes. There were jobs where only men were
accepted. An example could be that, in the past, it was difficult to find a policewoman. The best
jobs and salaries were given to men. Girls were not considered capable enough to deal with the
tough world.

Thinking about the future, the generation would be strongly developed if everything about
stereotypes changed. Members of stereotyped groups would not have to worry about what they
have to do. The mixed gender play is going to happen. Toys would be equal for both, boys and
girls. Jobs and salaries would be equal, too. As a result of all this, it would be a greater world with
no stereotypes and less bullying. For example, in the schools, where a lot of boys and girls are not
treated fairly.

To conclude, people tend to stereotype things, such as toys or jobs because the old generation
started to impose the idea that the girls were weaker and the boys stronger and they also said that
there were colours made for women and others for men, blue for boys and pink for girls.
