What is Human immunodeficiency virus?
❖ HIV is a virus. It’s a virus that never goes away.
❖ This virus infects humans
❖ This virus attacks a person's immune system. Immune system helps the body
fight against any infection such as bacteria and viruses. Once the immune
system is attacked by HIV it doesn't work properly.
❖ Once a persons is HIV positive that person will stay HIV positive forever.
❖ It can transfer from person to person
❖ Non-curable
What is Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome?
❖ AIDs refers to a set of symptoms and illnesses that occur at the very final
stage of HIV infection.
❖ Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome is a spectrum of condition caused by the
infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
❖ HIV/AIDS has a great impact on society, both as an illness and as a source of
discrimination.
❖ Non-curable
❖ People with AIDs cant fight off off even simple infections.
Difference
❏ When someone has had an HIV infection for a long time, the immune
system may become seriously damaged and the person may get very sick
with even common illness like the common cold, this is called AIDS.
❏ HIV is a virus that may cause an infection whereas AIDs is a syndrome.
❏ AIDs develops when HIV has caused serious damage to the immune
system.
❏ HIV can be controlled by the medication
❏ You can develop HIV without developing AIDs but if you have AIDs you
also have HIV.
Causes of HIV and AIDs:
➢ Unprotected sexual contact with an infected person
➢ Transmission from an infected women to her fetus or baby
➢ Through needle sharing among intravenous drug uses
➢ Having multiple partners
➢ Being sexually active
➢ Lack of knowledge
➢ Not using protection
○ Don't have a condom
○ Shy to buy a condom
○ Not knowing how to use a condom
How to prevent HIV / AIDs:
➢ Avoid having sexual contact with anyone who is or might be infected with HIV, or practice abstinence.
➢ Always practice protected sex
➢ Avoid risky behaviors
➢ Get more Knowledge
➢ Stick to one person
➢ Care about your and your partner's safety
➢ Participate in risk reduction programs
➢ Get tested and treated for other STDs beside HIV regularly
➢ Tell your partner if you have HIV
➢ Use a clean needle
➢ If your pregnant, get medical care right away
Refusal Skills to stop unprotected sex:
1. Saying NO
a. Use the word no
b. Give a strong non-verbal no message
c. Use a firm tone of voice
d. Clearly state your limits
e. Repeat the no message as much as you need
2. Alternative Actions
a. Suggest an activity that helps you get out of the situation
b. Suggest an activity that is positive, fun or realistic
c. Act on alternative suggestion
3. Delay Tactics
a. Say or do something to break the mood or cool down the situation
b. Say or do something that gives you time to think
c. If pressure continues than leave
The Basics:
● HIV is the virus that causes HIV infection
● AIDs is the advanced stage of HIV infection
● HIV is spread through the contact with blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, rectal
fluids, vaginal fluids or breast milk of a person with HIV.
● HIV is spread mainly by having anal or vaginal sex or sharing drug needles
or equipments with a person who has HIV.
● Antiretroviral therapy is the use of HIV medicines to treat hIV infection.
● ART cannot help cure the infection but it can help people live healthier and
longer live.
● Some body fluids such as saliva, blood, semen, vaginal fluids, pre-cum,
menstrual blood and breast milk can transmit HIV.
