Five articles on public awareness about the effects of waste disposal

1. Impacts of solid waste management in Pakistan: a case study of Rawalpindi city

Abstract
Improper solid waste management is causing negative impacts in Pakistan. To investigate the
causes Rawalpindi city was selected as a case study. The situation is becoming very complex
in the city due to industrialization, urbanization and improved living standards of urban areas,
as these things are the cause of drastic increase in the quantity and complexity of generated
waste. From this research, it is revealed that we have two major problems due to poor solid
waste management, i.e. communicable diseases and unhygienic environment. Because of high
growth rate, high waste generation rate, lack of efficient management and legislation, existing
solid waste management systems in the city are not working properly. The main reasons for
the failure of municipal solid waste management systems are unplanned annexation of the city,
extreme weather conditions, lack of public awareness/community involvement, improper
resources including improper equipment and lack of funds. Failure of the municipal solid waste
management system has serious environmental impacts like infectious diseases, land and air
pollution, blockage of drains and water pollution in natural streams.

2. Domestic waste disposal practice and perceptions of private sector waste

management in urban Accra.
Abstract
Background
Waste poses a threat to public health and the environment if it is not stored, collected, and
disposed of properly. The perception of waste as an unwanted material with no intrinsic value
has dominated attitudes towards disposal. This study investigates the domestic waste practices,
waste disposal, and perceptions about waste and health in an urban community.

3. Plastics, the environment and human health: current consensus and future trends
Abstract
Plastics have transformed everyday life; usage is increasing and annual production is likely to
exceed 300 million tons by 2010. In this concluding paper to the Theme Issue on Plastics, the
Environment and Human Health, we synthesize current understanding of the benefits and
concerns surrounding the use of plastics and look to future priorities, challenges and
opportunities. It is evident that plastics bring many societal benefits and offer future
technological and medical advances.

4. Evaluation of Solid Waste Generation, Categories and Disposal Options in
Developing Countries: A Case Study of Nigeria
ABSTRACT: The quantity and generation rate of solid wastes in Nigeria have increased at an
alarming rate over the years with lack of efficient and modern technology for the management
of the wastes. The generation rate, collection and disposal of solid wastes are functions of
several factors which if well considered and appropriated could bring the desired solution to
the waste management problems in Nigeria. The quantity and rate of solid waste generation in
several cities in Nigeria, factors influencing the generation, solid waste types and categories,
collection, disposal, reuse and recycling, and environmental problems were investigated in this
study. The results indicated large generation at high rate without a corresponding efficient
technology to manage the wastes.

5. Public Awareness about Disposal of Solid Waste and its Impact: A Study in
Tangail Pourashava, Tangail
Abstract
The investigation was conducted on public awareness about disposal of solid waste and its
impact in Thanapara, Beparipara and Kagmari of Tangail Pourashava. Data collected through
questionnaire interview from local residents, self-observation and secondary sources. The
investigation was conducted among three major infected areas by selecting normal dustbin and
open area during the different period from August to September 2011. In the study, total 100
respondents are interviewed and the result shows that waste are dumped here three times a day.
Most of the respondents demand for wrong site selection and improper maintenance causing
bad odor, diarrhea, skin diseases, aesthetic problem etc.

Introduction

Solid waste management includes all activities that seek to minimize the health, environmental and
aesthetic impacts of solid wastes. Presently we are facing the problems in the collection,
transportation and disposal of domestic solid waste in Pakistan irrespective of the size of the city,
therefore the environmental and sanitary conditions are becoming very complex and people are
helpless to live with unsanitary and unhygienic conditions. Solid waste management problems include
the consideration of all the aspects relating to solid waste and its management, either directly or
indirectly.
